An interesting and important book . Focuses on the study of the watermarks in Rembrandt's etchings

Currently my copy is lost somewhere between the bookshelves and my box of books to review, so my apologies for the introductory nature of my review.
I am no expert on Rembrandt's etchings. I do however have a number of books on the subject.
I do not however have the systematic catalogues that list and illustrate each etching in all it's states that is so necessary to make progress in the study of the etchings.
My interests lie with the Paintings and Drawings of Rembrandt.
Watermarks.
Watermarks have been known for well over 100 years, and are usually traces and illustrated at the back of important catalogues of Rembrant's Etchings and Drawings ( as for other artists )
So why the fuss?
Well, in the last 10-20 years people have started to apply standardised radiological techniques. This has lead to a much higher level of accuracy in determining watermarks.
Each watermark is handmade and although it may be of the same object, it's precise measurements will differ slightly. Also the paper is hand made and the lines of the mould may also show some variation.
Etchings
Etchings are small or large.
Each sheet of paper ( rather large ) will have only one watermark. Some have a simple counter mark on the other side.
If the etching is small their is only a small chance that the etching will contain the watermark or part of the watermark.
If the etching is one of Rembrandt's large etchings then it is more likely to contain the watermark.
Counter are less helpful.
Radiological Approaches.
One uses Low energy X-ray
Another Beta radiography
Occassionally electron microscopy is used.
The different techniques produce different results. Ie you cannot compare the result of a low energy radiography with a beta radiograph
For a useful explanation of these techniques seethe appendices in
"Fresh Woods and Pastures New 17th century Dutch Landscape Drawings from the Peck Collection."
These appendices are first rate and the clearest I have read so far.
WATERMARKS IN REMBRANDT PRINT'S
This is an exhibition of the long term project to examine most of Rembrandt's prints in North America for watermarks.Low energy radiography was used.
Examples of watermarks are shown
Many prints have no watermark and I cannot Rembrandt how many did.
I forget the conclusions- I wifi add these when the book is located.
Should you buy the book.
If you are interested in Rembrandt's etchings in American Collections then this book is likely to be foundational. It is possible that all the etchings will be redone using beta radiograph but I suspect not

Where is Watermark Research going.
Without doubt Ernest Hinterding has has stimulated extensive new research.
His doctoral thesis (expensive) opened many eyes .
His catalogue of the Fritz Lugt collection (out of print and expensive if you can find a copy ) is a first class work.
For my money I would try and track down a copy of
"Rembrandt the Printmaker"
Erik Hinterding, Ger Luijten, Martin Royalton Kisch et al
British Museum and the Rijksmuseum
