Italy: Beer Country
Seventeen years ago, a handful of men inspired a movement -Italian craft beer, Europe's most vibrant beer scene. Thanks to their determination to fight cultural bias and low expectations, the art of beer making has expanded from fewer than 20 microbreweries in 2001 to nearly 600 today, each with its signature brews and personalities. That growth hasn't come without cost as artisans continue to face government roadblocks like high - and complex - taxes and lack of national standards.
Italy: Beer Country reveals the craft beer movement's humble roots and passionate brewers such as Teo Musso and Agostino Arioli and their devoted patrons, describing a scene familiar to fans of American craft beer. Drawing on more than 20 years of experience working at the world-famous Falling Rock Tap House in Denver, Colorado, Paul Vismara and Bryan Jansing knowledgeably present a fascinating look at an ever-evolving craft beer movement that melds Europe's traditional beer cultures with Italian nuances. Their passion for the subject shows in their stories about the brewers and the craft beers that made them famous.

A great read for lovers of beer and anything Italian!
By Leslie matlen
I loved this book! I love most things Italian, and I was pleased to find this gem at the Tattered Cover bookstore in Denver, Colorado. It is a collaboration between two men: A gifted beer enthusiast, and author, and a gifted artist. This book takes you behind the scenes of the burgeoning craft beer industry in Italy. But, it does much more than that. From the accounts of the brave souls who undertake the production of high quality beer, learning as they go, to the stultifying requirements of the Italian tax and bureaucratic system, this book uncovers a side to Italy that is fascinating and frustrating in equal measure. You will learn new words such as campanilisimo or "bell towerism", and other insights into the Italian psyche!
Even if you are not a beer lover, if you love anything Italian, this is a great, fun read, with beautiful graphics!

I came, I saw, I drank beer.
By Martin Bundy
This is both a dangerous and a romantic book. I’m not sure how many books deserve that epitaph, but this one does. Why so? Well it is dangerous because once you have read it, or even when you are only partway through, you will want to spend money a lot of money because it does what every good book does; it makes you want to visit the sites, experience the (beery) delights and meet the characters that play a central role in its enthralling story. Therefore the danger is that you will want to jump on the next flight to Rome and make a bee line for Bir e Fud whose speciality is matching gourmet pizzas with Italian craft beer, before being faced with the decision of either heading an hour northeast of Rome to the village of Borgorose and the Birra Del Borgo brewery whose beers have received worldwide praise, or heading forty minutes south east of Rome to the “tiny Etruscan fortress town of Palestrina” to sample both top quality gourmet food along with a fine range of artisanal beers. These three places are just examples pulled from three consecutive chapters towards the end of the book. The book is littered with other alluring destinations, both in Rome and further afield from Milan to Genoa to Turin to Parma to Montepulciano.
It is also a deeply romantic book: most certainly not in the Mills and Boon tradition, although there is the story of one renowned brewer who returns to his love in Denmark to the detriment of Italian brewing scene. It is however romantic in the sense that it tells the story of extraordinary men who follow their dreams, who do not give in to the sceptics, the cynics, the tax authorities, the monumental Italian bureaucracy or the initially disinterested public. It tells the story of the first wave of brewing evangelists who rose above everything to create what is now a thriving nationwide craft beer scene in a country most people would still not expect any better than Peroni Nasty (Nastro Azzurro).
Some of the beer styles mentioned may be borrowed from other parts of the world, from dark ales of Belgium, to the West Coast IPAs of the US, the lagers from Germany, bitters from England and back to Belgium for their sour beers, but the beer scene is anything but copycat. A lot of these are just starting points for the founding fathers to go off in their own direction. There seems to be a love of breaking the rules and not following the norm which makes the prospect of trying some of these beers ever so enticing.
Bit by the bit, the story of the burgeoning beer scene is built up. The authors have still only scraped the surface though. There are now almost 600 microbreweries in Italy from a tally of less than 20 in 2001. They touch only 15 or so of them and the story that develops shows that it was not always a smooth path. There were fall outs, failures, disagreements, divorces and wrong turns alongside the accolades, prizes and successes. Each of these stories is told with an obvious love for the people playing a part. Most of these appear to be larger than life, so who wouldn’t want to seek out Teo Musso, Maltus Faber, Giovanni Campari or Leonardo Di Vincenzo, sit down and share a beer and hear some wonderful stories about how this new vibrant beer scene started? Now where can I get a cheap flight to Rome from?
