Delightful little antique fortune telling book

This is a great little book. It is not an all encompassing tome of old fashioned ways of telling
fortunes. But it does does cover several methods.
This would be fun for re-enactors, and modern Pagans
and fortune tellers looking for how it used to be done.
This is an reprint of an actual book printed in 1863, not a modern guess or reinvention.
Methods covered span the gamut from throwing three dice to answer questions and dream symbols to telling fortunes with moles(on your skin) to unlucky days.
Some of the methods are covered quite quickly; for example the coffee grounds and tea leaf reading sections. But the dice throwing, dream symbols and reading from playing card sections are extensive.
If you read "Reading Russian Fortunes:
Print Culture, Gender, and Divination in Russia from 1765" by Faith Wigzell, its fun to look at an actual sample of what she is discussing.

Very Interesting Read

I do like this book and find it vastly intriguing! However, I bought it to go with the Gypsy Witch Fortune Tellers Deck, and don't really think that it helps. There is a small percentage of the book that mentions cards.
The book mentions using dice for divinitation and how to do so - which I really enjoyed! It also has a small section that helps you use your name to find out what your "character" is. I didn't find this to be accurate, but then again the book is an outdated writing and it was a very fun activity.
There are a few other topics included in this book and it is a fun item to have - just don't expect it to be very helpful for card reading.

Cute and fun, geared towards the enthusiast/re-enactor

I bought this book on a whim, thought it would be a fun addition to our group activities at re-enactments since it was originally published in 1863. It is not a splashy coffee table book or a fancy gift for someone who likes shabby chic Victorian things. The book is a black and white reprint of an original period manual, and a bit dry for anyone expecting exotic party games. For the Victorian historian/enthusiast/re-enactor, it is a delightful little guide and a fun and authentic little activity.
Still haven't finished going through the whole book, but there are pages and pages of ways to tell one's fortune by rolling dice-- the "fortunes" were all very enigmatic, mysterious and a bit silly, almost like out of a Victorian fortune cookie. Mixed with some mulled wine, the whole affair could prove hilarious.
It's a cute little piece of history-- it mixes Victorian whimsy with the era's earnest attempt to make a serious science out of the flimsiest premise.
