About the Author
Michael Freeman, professional photographer and best-selling author, was born in England in 1945, took a Masters in Geography at Brasenose College, Oxford University, and then worked in advertising in London for six years. In 1971 he made the life-changing decision to travel up the Amazon with two secondhand cameras, and when Time-Life used many of the pictures he came back with, he embarked on a full-time photographic career.

Since then, working for clients that include all the world's major magazines, most notably the Smithsonian Magazine (for which he has shot more than 40 stories over 30 years), Freeman's reputation as one of the world's leading reportage photographershas been consolidated. Of his many books, which have sold over 4 million copies worldwide, more than 60 titles are on the practice of photography. For this photographic educational work he was awarded the Prix Louis Philippe Clerc by the French Ministry of Culture.

Freeman's books on photography have been translated into 27 languages.

Beyond Brilliant and a Must-Have for Experts to help break through to creating truly Creative work.

"Brilliant" and "Must-Have" don't begin to describe this very unique book. Perhaps a short quotation from the book works better: " Good photographers master their settings. Great photographers understand how to compose their shots. The best photographers find their own ways, or 'paths,' to reveal their subject's true nature. This book is about those paths, and how to find your own."

Unless you understand, in a deep sense composition, and, of course the camera's settings in a creative way, this book is not for you. If you are an experienced "expert", then this book could be for you - - - a way out of the usual into the truly creative world. A great photographer's book should contain great photos as examples, and this book does. Truly superlative work from , Michael Freedman himself and Richard Avedon. Art Kane, Paul Strand, Trent Parke, Ernst Haas, . . and many more.
Like all of Freedman's 104 books, his beautiful and concise words convey deep messages that can be acted upon when you next pickup your camera. But I would recommend that you re-read the words at least 3 times and view the illustrative images many times because the messages they convey are subtle and very deep.

Useful book for thinking

Great read with tons of useful information to spur creatively thinking about what and how you may not be shooting. For me it's a benefit to read through and be reminded of all the fundamentals I learned years ago. If you're in a creative rut, this book may help!

Watership Down has been a staple of high-school English classes for years. Despite the fact that it's often a hard sell at first (what teenager wouldn't cringe at the thought of 400-plus pages of talking rabbits?), Richard Adams's bunny-centric epic rarely fails to win the love and respect of anyone who reads it, regardless of age. Like most great novels, Watership Down is a rich story that can be read (and reread) on many different levels. The book is often praised as an allegory, with its analogs between human and rabbit culture (a fact sometimes used to goad skeptical teens, who resent the challenge that they won't "get" it, into reading it), but it's equally praiseworthy as just a corking good adventure.

The story follows a warren of Berkshire rabbits fleeing the destruction of their home by a land developer. As they search for a safe haven, skirting danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band and its compelling culture and mythos. Adams has crafted a touching, involving world in the dirt and scrub of the English countryside, complete with its own folk history and language (the book comes with a "lapine" glossary, a guide to rabbitese). The best book from the animal's point of view

Richard Adams used to make up stories about little bunnies for his daughters during long car rides in the English country. One day, infuriated at a lousy children’s book he bought, he considered: “I can do better than that”. The result is one of England’s most beloved young reader’s novels.

The story of Watership Down, edited originally in 1972, starts when the rabbit Fiver begins to have visions showing a great catastrophe destroying his colony. “The field is full of blood”, he says. This trope is based on Cassandra’s myth, and much like the Greek prophetess, the little bunny’s visions are ignored by the leaders and only a small group decides to escape in search of a better place.

When my girlfriend asks her English friends about Watership Down their expression shows love and fear at the same time. Love because the animal characters actions and personalities are built in a very endearing way by the author. Fear because the little furry creature’s deaths are many and bloody. Like all good children’s literature, Watership Down does not insult the young reader’s intelligence with simplified messages.

The bunnies have anthropomorphic thoughts and can speak, but the book was built around real rabbit’s behavior, their organization, their ways of feeding, etc. It’s interesting how the author imagined how it would be a society of hunted creatures, instead of hunters like us. They are in a constant state of fear, always alert to any weird sound or noise.

Adams also created a sort bunny speak, called “Lapine”, that even without the depth of other literary created languages like those made by Tolkien, has consistent prefixes and endings to convey and exotic but realistic tone. The rabbits also have a rich mythology with several stories intertwined.

There is the solar god Fritz, the black rabbit Inlé (bringer of death), the primordial rabbit El-ahraiah and his many tales deceiving dogs or stealthily attacking gardens. The characters are very well constructed. Fiver is the prophet flirting with madness, Hazel the leader, Bigwig the warrior, Blackberry is pretty much the scientist, Dandelion is the bard, and entertains his friend with his tales. The book has a curious flavor, like a Greek tragedy or a Shakespearean epic only with bunnies.

One of the best books I have ever read. The ambience makes the reader really imagine how life is a few centimeters from the ground and think about how frail life is. And also about the number of stories that are hidden everywhere.

A must-have for the collector, the long-time fan, or anyone wanting to share this classic story with loved ones

Let me start by saying that Watership Down is my all-time favorite book. I first read it as a child and have read it multiple times since then. Not surprisingly, my paperback copy was showing a lot of wear and I thought it was high time I invested in a hardcover copy.

This copy is simply gorgeous and is an ABSOLUTE MUST for the collector. The dust jacket artwork is hauntingly lovely and has gold foil detailing that is echoed on the front cover. The end papers are a beautiful robin's egg blue, which is a nice complement to the cover art. The publisher really did this book justice with all of these thoughtful details.

But what really sets this edition apart is the illustrations. Simply put, they are stunning. There are around 20 or so full-color illustrations throughout, each of them beautifully capturing a scene from the book. Some of the illustrations spread across 2 pages, and one of them was also used as the dust jacket cover art. The illustrations have been printed on glossy pages, which showcases this artwork to full effect.

I was a little surprised to find the font was a bit larger than I'm used to, but it's by no means an issue. The book dimensions are 9.5"x7.5", so the slightly larger font actually makes sense, as it gives the impression that this edition is meant to be read aloud and shared, which I certainly intend to do with my young son.

The book was very well protected during shipping, and I was so pleased to receive this book in PERFECT condition from the seller.

Incredible Story-telling - Gripping, Touching, and Meaningful - an Adventure Worth Taking

Watership Down is an incredible adventure of Hazel, a rabbit, forced to take an epic journey across the countryside to find a new home along with a band of misfits and unlikely adventurers. On the way they must continually use their cunning to protect themselves from predators, humans, and even other rabbits. It is emotionally touching, briskly adventurous, and very, very human - like all good animal stories are.

This was the kind of adolescent fiction that we have become accustomed to today - insightful, entertaining, and challenging. But it was written before the modern adolescent fiction explosion, and as such, I think it has largely been missed and overlooked (unless it is taught in the classroom, which it is in many high schools).

With Richard Adam's death in 2016, the novel has again gained more public notice. If you haven't read this, I encourage you to grab it and read it. It is one of those stories that I read many, many years ago for the first time and I still remember how it gripped my imagination and impacted my heart. There are a lot of good stories out there. This isn't one of them - this is one of the great ones.

In this book, Jerome Groopman shares with readers what he has learned about the need to keep hope alive, especially in the face of serious illness. The key themes he explores are the extent to which hope features in the experience of patients with chronic and terminal illnesses; the importance of hope in enabling patients, families, friends, and physicians to meet the challenges of serious illness; the various forms that hope can take; and the role of the physician in fostering or at least not extinguishing hope. Groopman discusses these problems through a series of thoughtful case histories, which will doubtless resonate with both clinicians and nonmedical readers. He then adds a summary of some current research into the physiological basis of what we call hope. The brief foray into the scientific understanding of hope, though of some interest, is in many ways a diversion from the main focus of this thoughtful book. The Anatomy of Hope is not about the science of medicine but, instead, examines the art of medicine. Reading it, I had a strong sense that a driving force behind the writing of this book was the author's wish to speak directly to clinicians, specifically to those responsible -- especially through example -- for the education of future generations of doctors. Groopman has learned the hard way about the important role hope can have in the experience of illness, and he wants to share these lessons. Just as parents know how painful it can be to watch one's child learn through painful mistakes, experienced doctors realize that the art of medicine is rarely acquired without mistakes. Unfortunately, when doctors make errors, patients must also pay the price, and in appealing to doctors not to underestimate the part they can play in fostering hope, Groopman clearly believes that both doctors and patients have something to gain. Somewhat lost within the text of this lovely book is a chapter in which the author tells of his own painful experience of a temporary loss of hope, the result of debilitating back pain. This understated chapter would have merited placement at the forefront of the book with a clear statement about why it was included. If I had to guess, I would say that as a result of his experience, Groopman knows the dreadful price that patients can pay when hope is lost, and the pivotal role that physicians can have in fostering and restoring that hope. Groopman writes with the authority earned from his long career as a hematologist and oncologist, professor at Harvard Medical School, and medical staff writer for The New Yorker. Reviewers contend that this slim volume is useful for people suffering serious illness--and just about everyone else. While at times the case histories seem one-dimensional, they aptly illustrate Groopman's points with sensitivity and insight. Interestingly, Groopman never defines hope in his work. Instead, he shows how individual patients view hope--as a cure, as a joke, or whatever else--and how it affects their outcome. Both patients and their healers must constantly strive toward hope, he argues. The Anatomy of Hope also highlights the uncertainty of medical diagnoses and serves as a reminder to physicians and other healthcare workers to present their patients with choices.

Great book, inspired me!

I bought this book after recently being diagnosed with a brain tumor. At this point, too small to tell if it's benign or malignant. Another scan due in August. Before reading the book,and having the diagnosis, I always thought quality of life was more important than quantity.I am a nurse too. I always thought if I was diagnosed with stage 4 anything,(last stage)I would opt to do nothing. Just enjoy the time I had left, the best I could. But now after reading the book, I think I might seek aggressive treatment in hopes I could be like the occasional person who survives for years in spite of the odds against them. Some of them even cured. I think what each one of us has to ask ourselves if we are faced with a terminal diagnosis, am I up for the fight? It will take quite a bit of suffering to find out if you may be the exception,not everyone has the strength to do this. And even after aggressive treatment & a positive mind set, the person may still not survive. The book gave me a lot of hope about the mind/body connection & the power of the body to heal itself.Definitely worth reading. The fear you have when you find out you have possible terminal disease is overwhelming, but what my Dr said to me helped so much "just take one day @ a time" It has been a month since my diagnosis, & I am feeling better but I still have my moments, but then when I get afraid or depressed, I think, hey I am alive, still enjoying my life. There are so many others in this world so much worse off than I am. Hope is the most important thing there is besides Love. Don't let anyone take your hope away.

The author is a hematologist/oncologist who is not afraid to tell you about the mistakes he made s along his path to becoming a high-profile and much sought after cancer doctor. He really lets you in on what he was thinking when he made each decision (good and bad), and what unique lessons he learned from each of his patients. He discerns, patient by patient, which facets of their characters allow them to become "exceptional" patients, and the means by which exceptional patients ultimately become successful.

But be warned: success does not always mean that "exceptional" patients live. In the area of cancer, some do not survive. Instead, Dr. Groopman redefines success by observing the common similarities of the patients who are able to weather the storms of their illnesses without losing themselves along the way. These patients find a way to remain grounded, less fearful and more able to retain their pre-illness character-traits no matter where their paths may lead them...and THAT is where the success lies.The Anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness

Brilliant Study of Mind-Body Connection

This elegantly-written and researched book analyzes the link between mental state and illness--how we feel in the world and how that affects our ability to heal physically and also have the strength to fight back. But it's not black & white or cut and dried, it really explores the area of medicine that is still gray--the role of personality. A lovely book and a great gift. Also, if you're looking for inspiration, try, "I SLEEP AT RED LIGHTS: A True Story of Life After Triplets," by Bruce Stockler, the author's discovery of the meaning of life and death through the chaos of his marriage, career, famly illness and brand-new triplets.

You Have To Be Damned To Be Saved

This play has the secondary title "A Gay Fantasia on National Themes," but the "Gay" portion seems unnecessary. Reflecting the self-seeking, ambitious attitude that dominated the middle 1980s, Kushner uses jagged language, a clash of characters, and tension born from manipulating audience stereotypes to make us wonder if perhaps we've lost sight of our original national purpose.

Not for nothing does this play begin at an immigrant's funeral. This nation is a fusion of peoples drawn from elsewhere, a mix that cannot be made again. We know the officiating rabbi means it in the most literal sense when he says, "You do not live in America. No such place exists." This America is a created land, but created of all the anger, frustration, and venality of the assembled characters.

The lies these characters tell themselves are phenomenal. After the funeral, Louis, a relative of the deceased confesses that he didn't introduce his male lover to the family because "I get so closety at these family things." This is probably the most direct any of the characters are at any point in the play. Perhaps it's introduced very early to let us know that levels of dishonesty will be calibrated in every scene. And no dishonesty is more powerful than when the characters come to believe their own lies.

When Roy Cohn is diagnosed with AIDS at the end of the first act, before he does anything else, he revises his own prognosis to correspond to his own self-figuration. Not only does he tell himself that he has cancer, he bullies his doctor to ratify the diagnosis so that he can go out and tell everyone else the same thing. Even when his prot�g�, Joe Pitt, admits his own homosexuality, Cohn continues to hide from the world, and excoriate himself for hiding. Cohn's self-loathing is epic in scope, entirely consistent with the hatred Kushner implies he pushed out into the world with his militancy.

Though she is not as open with other characters as Louis, Harper Pitt has the most elaborate system of self-deception of the play. She invents friends to talk to, justifying her refusal to interact with the world. She manufactures an illusory pregnancy to get pity--but who from? Herself? It's hard to imagine who else she might elicit sympathy from, because she alienates her only ally, her husband Joe, as her world turns more inward upon itself. Her imaginary friend, Mr. Lies, gives away his identity with his very name. But even Mr. Lies won't participate unreservedly in the process. "You can be numb and safe here, that's what you came for," he tells her.

Perhaps because of the lies, all the characters seem to seek their own destruction. Faced with his lover's increasing illness, Louis flees to reckless sex with an anonymous partner--and, it is implied, more partners than we see. Likewise, Joe first admits his homosexuality by calling his mother, a judgmental Mormon unlikely to take kindly to such a revelation. On top of that, he calls her from a pay phone in the most dangerous part of New York's Central Park at the most dangerous time of night. He's asking to get killed, and perhaps he's asking for it because he wants to be punished.

Though it's not the end of the play, the summation of the themes takes place in the Act 3n Scene 2. Louis' garbled, self-justifying monologue tries to make sense of the way in which a gay man can face himself in the disapproving world that is Reagan's America. But what actually comes out of his mouth is an incomprehensible hash of American national mythology, half-remembered Nietzschean philosophy, a badly scrambled reading of race and cultural relations across borders, and more. As a court word processor, Louis has made his life out of comprehending the rhetoric and literature of justice. But he cannot remember how it actually goes.

This play, being actually half a play, culminates with the potential for redemption, in the final scene. Prior Walter, ravaged by AIDS-Related Complex, is the one character who cannot lie to himself. We watch, over the course of three acts, as each untruth and every easy self-deception is progressively expunged. At the end, devastated and alone, he is the only character fit to bear audience to the titular Angel.

But honest Prior Walter, and the lying characters all around him, do not yet have that redemption. They cannot have it, they cannot be saved, until they have reached the very bottom of their arcs. And that is what we see in this play. We see them being burned away, bit by bit. We see them being made ready for the possible salvation that comes in Part Two.

Wonderful, capturing story

This story is so touching, and so timeless. It really stretches across time, and touches the heart of so many who lost loved ones to AIDS. In addition, it is such an eye opening story for those who have not. Beautifully written, and masterfully told.

Fine, save one scene.

Tony Kushner, Angels in America: Millennium Approaches (Theatre Communications Group, 1993)

I thought Millennium Approaches was going along like a house on fire for the first two-thirds of its length. It's character-driven, it's funny despite its heartbreaking subject matter, it handles an historical figure in such a way as to make him larger than life. (I will admit up front that, despite my mother having suggested I do so for something like twenty years now, I have not read Citizen Cohn, her favorite Roy Cohn biography, and so I can't actually say how much of Kushner's portrayal of Cohn is accurate; it is, however, all kinds of fun.) And Kushner was getting his message across in just the right way--letting the story impart the message. Then comes Scene 2 of Act 3, where Louis and Belize are sitting in a bar talking. And Louis' logorrhea is message, message, message, message, message, and the whole thing just goes to hell in a handbasket. The funny thing is, Belize recognizes that it's all message, message, message, message, message and calls Louis on it repeatedly. Even Kushner's characters can't stand message drama! (That doesn't stop Louis from prattling on.) I've been seeing this more and more recently; authors trying to insert message drama (or fiction or poetry or...) by making the characters who have to put up with it slap the speaker into senselessness. (Unless it's internal, then they get nasty looks; think about the interminable message paragraphs that Kenzie suddenly comes up with in A Drink Before the War, for example.) Here's a tip, guys: it doesn't matter how you try to cache message-based writing into your work. It's still crap. It has always been crap (well, okay, 95% of the time), and it will always be crap. And here's the kicker, in Tony Kushner's case: if you're already treading on ground that activists have worked over hundreds of thousands of times, there's basically a guarantee that some political activist with a placard has already said everything you're trying to say. And probably said it better. In this case, it's been done hundreds, if not thousands of times. It's not only message crap, it's retreaded message crap.

Now that I've spent three hundred words on Louis and Belize's painful, conversation in Act Three, I'll say that the rest of the play is just plain awesome. The characters jump off the page, the pace is fast (despite there being almost no action), the dialogue is, in the main, witty and interesting. Take out that one scene, and this is great stuff. Unfortunately, no one thought to take out that one scene. ***

The aims of the book - written by a practising engineer for practising engineers - are to provide an understanding of the basic principles of sonar and, to develop formulae and "rules of thumb" for sonar design and performance analysis. Ashley Waite uses his long experience in the design, trials and performance analysis of sonar systems to provide practical guidance and solutions to problems encountered by sonar engineers and technicians.

The books divides into the following parts:
* Equipment parameters: the motion of sound in an elastic medium; definitions of sound intensity and source level; the use of projector arrays to increase the source level; the use of hydrophone arrays to improve the signal to noise ratio of a wanted sound.
* The propagation of sound in the sea and the backgrounds to detection: spreading and absorption losses; propagation modes and simple modelling; noise and reverberation; the sonar equations
* Practical sonar systems: passive and active sonar systems; passive broadband, narrowband, intercept and communications (as a special case of intercept) sonars; active sonars for the detection of submarines, mines and torpedoes.
Sonar for Practising Engineers, third edition, covers all aspects of sonar systems and has extensive worked examples. No prior knowledge of sonar is assumed and the physical principles and mathematics will be readily understood by engineers, technicians and students of underwater acoustics. New to this edition, are end-of-chapter exercises and solutions for self assessment and training.

About the Author
ASHLEY WAITE retired from the UK Ministry of Defence in 1990 after 40 years of Underwater Warfare Research at Portland. He then joined Thomson Marconi Sonar (now Thales Underwater Systems Limited) as a Consultant for a further 10 years. He still maintains an involvement with sonar in a freelance capacity.

A compulsary read for anyone working with sonar

There are many myths regarding sonar, in both civilian and military applications. The perhaps best known ones are provided by Tom Clancy in his book/movie "The Hunt for Red October". While sonarman Jones and his $40 million computer make great additions to that story, they have little to do with reality.
This book, on the other hand, has everything to do with reality. It describes the working principles of sonar in as simple terms as possible. The explanations and mathematics are kept on a level where any electrical engineer can follow it, and the material is still general enough so that even renowned researchers on underwater acoustics can learn from it.
To me, one of the greatest assets with this book is that it so clearly shows
- what real-life sonars do
- how they do it
- why they do it like that
- what problems are encountered
This is information that is hard to come by elsewhere, and give rise to all sorts of speculations when lacking. The book is as relevant to navy sonars as civilian ones.

Excellent for beginners in sonar

This might not be the premier book on Sonar, but it's the best I've found for beginners in the field. It's simple and to the point, and doesn't use long, drawn out mathematical explanations of the forces at work. That makes it perfect for people trying to understand the basic concepts. However, it's not the most useful desk reference, because sometimes the mathematical explanations and models in books like Urick are needed. This book provides the basis for even understanding what those models are trying to explain.

Clinical Reference

I gave this five stars due to its usefulness in student clinic. I use the kindle version and the table of contents is hard. You will have to go to the organ system first. Once you click that and are taken there, then you will find the links for the different diseases. It does an excellent job of walking you through everything and includes various treatment options. Well referenced. I actually would recommend this one over the often recommended Textbook of natural medicine. I would recommend getting The Clinician's Handbook of Natural Medicine as a quick reference with this textbook for more in depth. Combine those two with the 5 minute clinical consult for your allopathic overview and you will be set nicely.

Excellent book, I use it all the time. Well formatted and easy to understand whether you are after a quick explanation or more detailed information. I was a little worried about spending the money but I use it all the time especially since having a baby.
