Just a marvelous overview of the many regions of the USA with great color photographs throughout. I use it for Adult Intermediate ESL because the information is excellent and interesting and not dated (except the page on the Twin Towers which should be replaced.) Students enjoy this book too.

It's well bound for a paperback and mine has withstood many years' use.

About the Author
David Hilbert (1862-1943) received his PhD from the University of K?nigsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia) in 1884. He remained there until 1895, after which he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of G?ttingen. He held this professorship for most of his life. Hilbert is recognized as one of the most influential mathematicians of the 19th and early 20th centuries. His own discoveries alone would have given him that honour, yet it was his leadership in the field of mathematics throughout his later life that distinguishes him. Hilbert's name is given to Infinite-Dimensional space, called Hilbert space, used as a conception for the mathematical analysis of the kinetic gas theory and the theory of radiations.

Richard Courant (1888-1972) obtained his doctorate at the University of G?ttingen in 1910. Here, he became Hilbert's assistant. He returned to G?ttingen to continue his research after World War I, and founded and headed the university's Mathematical Institute. In 1933, Courant left Germany for England, from whence he went on to the United States after a year. In 1936, he became a professor at the New York University. Here, he headed the Department of Mathematics and was Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences - which was subsequently renamed the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Among other things, Courant is well remembered for his achievement regarding the finite element method, which he set on a solid mathematical basis and which is nowadays the most important way to solve partial differential equations numerically.

state of the art in the 50's

Beware the german edition is the prewar edition, and the english edition is a

complete overhaul to include modern material at the time. This is not really a

textbook, but a sourcebook of "issues" in partial differential equations. Some

problems have been forgotten now due to the focussing on real, linear equations

and weak solutions (as described, for example, in the books by Hormander). It is

a gem for who wants some taste of the full breadth of theory of PDE's.

partial differentiual equations

Vol. I is standard mathematical physics. I've only used vol. II for one topic, first order partial differential equations, linear, quasilinear, and nonlinear. The treatment is very good. This is not a standard topic, it's rarely if ever taught to physicists. Readers brought up on standard math physics will likely be surprised to learn that first order pdes are 1-1 with dynamical systems. Other recommendable books on first order pdes are Duff, Sneddon, Garabedian, and John.

not bad but could've been better

this book starts off a tad amateurish as Polan tries to tackle the film as a phenomenon first, and then analyze the actual film second. it seems that the author's initial take is that PULP FICTION is more pre-occupied with style over substance but as the film is analyzed in more detail argues that there is actual depth and substance to Tarantino's film!
this comes across as kind of awkward but Polan's writing style does improve the further along you read. i just wish that the author hadn't been so concerned with writing the first academic analysis of PULP FICTION and blasting the slew of sloppily written Tarantino biographies and websites, and focused more on the actual film.
i also question Polan's research notes. out of all the articles used/read there is one glaring omission: Gavin Smith's seminal article/interview with Tarantino about PULP FICTION in Film Comment around the time the film came out. Smith's article still remains, in my mind, THE best analysis of Tarantino's film. it's a shame the BFI didn't get him to write one of these books on PF.

Unworthy of its subject.

There's pulp fiction, then there's worse--namely, thin, obvious, breezy commentary that pretends to be scholarly, or at least "academic." This very slight volume wastes time talking about websites dedicated to the film, then attempts to argue that "Pulp Fiction" is strictly a "postmodern" event to be experienced rather than thought much about (the author's grand conclusion: it represents "style over substance"). I didn't even find the book of much use when I wanted some reminders of plot sequence and characters' names.
Perhaps I expected too much for my money as a result of reading this same series' "The Birds" by Camille Paglia (who obviously immersed herself in an exhaustive research of the filmmaking process as well as the final product). This edition, on the other hand, has the feel of something tossed out in a couple of week-ends.

Deconstructing Tarantino

Dana Polan does an excellent job of breaking down the phenomenon of Pulp Fiction by examining it both textually and culturally, and in doing so, brings the runaway success of Pulp Fiction and the apparent "God-liness" of Tarantino back down to Earth. The book is a quick read, informative, stimulating, and fun. Having been ambivalent about this film since its release, Dana Polan hits the nail on the head about exactly why I both love and hate this film.
At any rate, if you are at all interested about Pulp Fiction (whether positively or negatively), I urge you to give this a read. And, the section on the cyber-world of Pulp Fiction is, at the very least, a humorous added bonus.

Interesting history, very difficult to read.

Waite attempts to trace the history of the Rosicrucians from before the publication of the Fama to his contemporaries. His style is very difficult to read, and the book reads like a doctoral thesis written in lavish 19th century prose (which is almost exactly what this book is). Almost every page contains footnoted references, which was the style of the times, and they are almost all in Latin and German. If you know German you will do OK, but a cursory knowledge of Latin is recommended if you want to understand any of the references -- translations are not provided by the author. Besides presenting his own theories, Waite examines efforts put forth by other authors. Typical of Waite, he all but calls them blundering idiots. To his credit, he is ruthless in presenting textual evidence and references for all his claims. This is a very dry and scholarly work, and unless you are truly interested in the subject matter, you should pass this one over. However, if you would like a good start to research the Rosicrucians complete with references to base documents, this is definitely the book to get.

Waite is always informative, sometimes frustrating, and always opinionated. This book is no different. Well thought out, full of rigid opinion, and a disagree with the end premise. I am, however, better off for having read it and do recommend it to students of the Rose and Cross. LVX

An Excellent History!

One of the best histories available on the Rosicrucians! Waite writes in an intellectual non-condescending manner to help the reader fully understand the origins and development of this esoteric fraternity. Will clear up any confusion about different splinter gorups and how they relate to each other. A great read!
