`Mood is the background against which we work.'

Regardless of how you are feeling, whether you feel energetic or lethargic, anxious or calm, your mood affects the way your mind works and your overall outlook on life. It stands to reason, then, that most of us would like to reduce periods where moods and energy levels are low so that we can be more creative and productive.

This book provides a number of self-help tools that can assist. I like the mood mapping and tracking suggestions which can enable patterns to be recognised and, where required, addressed. Self-awareness is essential: learning to identify the physical and emotional factors that affect mood is critical for any of us who suffer from mood disorders. Identifying the triggers that can impact on mood (and what to do) is also important. Mapping mood and energy levels is a great starting point.

At the core of this book is a practical fourteen day plan which, for me, makes a lot of sense. The author of this book, Dr Liz Miller, developed these techniques after being diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder and they have apparently served her well. The key, though, is self-help. If you want better understanding of mood and its role in your own quality of life, then this book may assist.

Valuable tool for anyone with bipolar disorder, depression, or other mood disorder

This is a positive, forward-looking book, that will give hope to anyone who has bipolar disorder, the symptoms of bipolar disorder, or other mood disorder, including depression. It helps you precipitate what causes your moods to swing, what makes you manic, what makes you depressed, helping you to self-regulate. Dr. Miller herself struggled for years with bipolar disorder and everything that went with it, but was able to "cure" herself, which isn't a single giant step, but a series of steps, which resulted in normalacy in her moods and behaviors. Lifestyle changes helped her, in addition to charting her moods diligently, and finding out what was behind her mood swings. She used a journal and wrote prolifically in her beginning stages of recovery. She researched bipolar disorder profoundly, although, at that time, there wasn't too much in the way of research on the subject.

Among other things, she cut out alcohol completely, which is an important step for anyone with bipolar disorder or related mental health difficulties. She stopped watching emotional or disturbing movies. She gradually cut down on her medications, (the key is gradually, not abruptly).

Additional helpful info: (The book, Taking Back Control My Self-Management Guide to Psychiatric Medication (French/English, from Quebec, not on Amazon, you currently have to order direct) is helpful for anyone who wants to cut down on or come off of psychiatric meds. It is designed to be used with your doctor, not as self help, although some do come off meds on their own, like Dr. Miller, who is a Dr. herself, and make a success of it. The Taking Back Control book, though is specifically for those with a cooperative doctor).

In any case, this book is a helpful tool that is recommended. Dr. Liz has been off of psychiatric meds for 14 years, and feels she is completely cured of her bipolar disorder, which was aggravated by lifestyle. Lifestyle changes and vigorous self-monitoring were the keys.

This is one tool, among others, for positive self-help for bipolar disorder. The Bipolar Workbook: Tools for Controlling Your Mood Swings is also good, although it encourages readers to stay on meds, accepting the Medical Model (see Valenstein's Blaming the Brain: The Truth About Drugs and Mental Health and Kiesler's Beyond the Disease Model of Mental Disorders).

Mood Mapping is a good read providing a needed and helpful tool.

This is an excellent book for anyone with mood disorders of any type. It helps you get to the root of the problem, find out what might be causing a mood disorder, recommended book for bipolar disorder.
