`Mood is the background against which we work.'

Regardless of how you are feeling, whether you feel energetic or lethargic, anxious or calm, your mood affects the way your mind works and your overall outlook on life. It stands to reason, then, that most of us would like to reduce periods where moods and energy levels are low so that we can be more creative and productive.

This book provides a number of self-help tools that can assist. I like the mood mapping and tracking suggestions which can enable patterns to be recognised and, where required, addressed. Self-awareness is essential: learning to identify the physical and emotional factors that affect mood is critical for any of us who suffer from mood disorders. Identifying the triggers that can impact on mood (and what to do) is also important. Mapping mood and energy levels is a great starting point.

At the core of this book is a practical fourteen day plan which, for me, makes a lot of sense. The author of this book, Dr Liz Miller, developed these techniques after being diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder and they have apparently served her well. The key, though, is self-help. If you want better understanding of mood and its role in your own quality of life, then this book may assist.

Valuable tool for anyone with bipolar disorder, depression, or other mood disorder

This is a positive, forward-looking book, that will give hope to anyone who has bipolar disorder, the symptoms of bipolar disorder, or other mood disorder, including depression. It helps you precipitate what causes your moods to swing, what makes you manic, what makes you depressed, helping you to self-regulate. Dr. Miller herself struggled for years with bipolar disorder and everything that went with it, but was able to "cure" herself, which isn't a single giant step, but a series of steps, which resulted in normalacy in her moods and behaviors. Lifestyle changes helped her, in addition to charting her moods diligently, and finding out what was behind her mood swings. She used a journal and wrote prolifically in her beginning stages of recovery. She researched bipolar disorder profoundly, although, at that time, there wasn't too much in the way of research on the subject.

Among other things, she cut out alcohol completely, which is an important step for anyone with bipolar disorder or related mental health difficulties. She stopped watching emotional or disturbing movies. She gradually cut down on her medications, (the key is gradually, not abruptly).

Additional helpful info: (The book, Taking Back Control My Self-Management Guide to Psychiatric Medication (French/English, from Quebec, not on Amazon, you currently have to order direct) is helpful for anyone who wants to cut down on or come off of psychiatric meds. It is designed to be used with your doctor, not as self help, although some do come off meds on their own, like Dr. Miller, who is a Dr. herself, and make a success of it. The Taking Back Control book, though is specifically for those with a cooperative doctor).

In any case, this book is a helpful tool that is recommended. Dr. Liz has been off of psychiatric meds for 14 years, and feels she is completely cured of her bipolar disorder, which was aggravated by lifestyle. Lifestyle changes and vigorous self-monitoring were the keys.

This is one tool, among others, for positive self-help for bipolar disorder. The Bipolar Workbook: Tools for Controlling Your Mood Swings is also good, although it encourages readers to stay on meds, accepting the Medical Model (see Valenstein's Blaming the Brain: The Truth About Drugs and Mental Health and Kiesler's Beyond the Disease Model of Mental Disorders).

Mood Mapping is a good read providing a needed and helpful tool.

Great if you know the medieval word; useless otherwise

I bought this wordbook to be able to look up the Medieval word for something but it doesn't work that way. If you KNOW the medieval word, in some cases this book will give you the definition (though I was surprised at common terms that were omitted, like "rushlight" used extensively in the Middle Ages). If you know the English word for it, you will not be helped to find its Medieval equivalent.

What this book needs is a list of English words and then the Medieval equivalent with the definition. Like an English-Medieval dictionary that works both ways. If you don't know the Medieval word, you will not find this book helpful. I didn't. It was frustrating.

Very High Yield!

High yield cell and molecular biology is exactly what it says, and from the outset doesn't pretend to be anything else. "Lean efficient text" says the blurb, "Study guides with the barest essentials". These words certainly comforted me after reading the somewhat ominous title! The text is compact, with clear and helpful diagrams illustrating and clarifying the most difficult concepts in the book. The style is in fact very much the same as I might choose to write own revision notes, with chapters divided into sub-titles, and those into bullet points. Key words are emboldened, so it is possible to absorb a page by only scanning the bold type; useful if you are caught short when preparing for an exam and need the facts quickly! There is a smattering of clinical examples throughout, and descriptions of procedures such as PCR, which both help anchor your thoughts of the sometimes abstract nature of the subject. Being a molecular biology book it is biased toward genetics, and as this is a confusing area for many students (including me), this will help if your genetics lectures tend to sail several meters over your head. On the downside, the economic nature of the text and the no-frills nature of the diagrams mean that it is not a particularly colourful or engaging read in it's own right. This is also positive, meaning that it is easier to extract information quickly than would be possible from a more bulky text. It is clearly meant to be dipped into, rather than read cover-to-cover. Realistically though, who would read a textbook cover-to-cover? People who will benefit from this book will be pre-clinical medical students, those intercalating a BSc in clinical science or genetics, doctors requiring an up-to-date review, or other students of biomedical science. This should not be your only textbook on cellular biology and genetics, but will serve as the perfect revision tool when exams sidle up too close for comfort.

Definitely not worth the hype

I bought this book to study for the USMLE Step 1 exam because of recommendations that I read on [...]. The book is currently out of print, and many people will try to buy this book for exorbitantly high prices in some cases. It is not worth any more than cover price in my opinion. I admittedly have a solid background in Genetics from undergrad and research but I probably have the same background in Molecular Biology as every other US med student and I don't think I really learned anything from this book that I didn't already know, or at least anything I wouldn't have learned from UWorld and First Aid. If you struggle with these subjects, this book presents the concepts very clearly and concisely, but if you are not particularly weak in this area, I don't think this book is worth the extra money that it sometimes costs.

JENNIFER ACKERMAN has been writing about science, nature, and human biology for almost three decades. The Genius of Birds: Intricately Intertwined Observations and Findings by a Dedicated Author

The Genius of Birds, by Jennifer Ackerman is a gamechanger for the way in which the curious reader will think concerning birds. Perhaps you thought birds were cute but not very bright, for example. Get ready to change your mind when you read in chapter one about "007", a corbid (kind of crow from New Caledonia), who goes through 8 steps, using tools, within two and a half minutes to get to a piece of food, after one scrutiny of this puzzle. Many types of birds are very smart, in the manner which humans are smart. Interestingly, the birds which take the longest to raise in the nest are the smartest and have the biggest brains (with the appropriate neurons). This section discusses the brilliance of some kinds of birds.Here you will find the tool users and others, such as the kees, who love clowning around and horseplay. As an illustration of this, the author mentions a kee who was seen rolling up a doormat and pushing it down a flight of steps.
The writing by the author Jennifer Ackerman is at times beautiful ( as when she is describing the rainforest at nightfall),or laugh-out-loud funny (she discusses attempts by a bird biologist to measure intelligence in his test subjects by disguising himself, wearing at different sessions: a kimono, a wig,sunglasses, or walking with a limp, or hopping. They always recognized him). I was totally rolling when I read this, thinking of Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies. She is always fresh too, with new news on birds right up to this year. As things have changed dramatically in what we know about birds within the past ten years, this book is welcome as an overview, now. This is a book for bird lovers of all sorts.
There is a section about the social aspect of birds, subtitled "twitter". This is fascinating too. The reader will learn about how different types of birds bond, and how they teach their young to perform certain important actions they will eventually need to survive. Also discussed is how some types of birds teach others in their particular "group" techniques they have been trained. , Incredibly, researchers have taught certain birds to open feeders in a special manner. They then were able to watch and track as their trained birds performed the tasks in the woods. The birds they had trained managed to train additional wild members to do exactly as they did, What collaborative little creatures!
Further on, you learn about vocal virtuosity. I particularly love bird song, as I find it incredibly uplifting. I didn't know that birds must be tutored to sing however. I understand this now, from this book.In this chapter you learn that among Thomas Jefferson's favorite pets were his mockingbirds. Later,when you read about Honey Child, a hand raised mockingbird, your jaw will drop with amazement at the repertoire of his songs, which he would add to and occasionally drop throughout the length of his life. Woodpeckers, wrens, jays, you name it, Honey Child is worth the read! You will learn that this intricate process of vocal learning is termed "advanced", because, it's done "our way", eg., the way humans teach their children, and the way children learn to selectively speak.The male songbirds who have better songs appeal to the females more, too.As the author writes, "Listening for super-sexy syllables allows female canaries to rule out males with poor bilateral co-ordination" This is important, if you are a lady canary!
Read on, through this award-winning author's book, to learn about birds who decorate: "the bird artist", birds who can map: "a mapping mind" and finally, sparrows: "sparrowville".
This is a book to curl up with in the winter, or to take along on your cruise. It doesn't really have photos, just a few sketches of birds opening each chapter, but that is not the point of this book. The Genius of Birds is about behaviors, patterns, reversal learning, which bird is the "world's dumbest"--yes, it has an offering for that, but not the author's (and I cracked up at that part!!!), the importance of studying birds in their natural environment to learn more and better understand them, and plenty more. The Genius of Birds is a big read, but nothing in it is wasted on the willing reader. I applaud Ackerman for taking me outside and to all sorts of amazing places, when she wrote this uplifting, extraordinary book about beautiful, beautiful birds.

More Than You Ever Dreamed About Birds

Birds are not the little feathered automatons we once believed, says this fascinating book. Their brains may be small, and they are built differently from mammalian brains, but they can still execute prodigious feats of intellect--tool-making, map-making, memory, and the creation of beauty. The study of bird intelligence is more complex than you might think. Even the definition of intelligence is a daunting task, with much room for controversy. Most fascinating to this reviewer was the question of whether intellect correlates to the survival of an individual or a species. Perhaps the answer is 'it depends.'

Author Jennifer Ackerman writes in a somewhat dry manner, but she makes the extensive research on bird intelligence accessible and leaves the reader wanting more. How do birds carry out those vast migrations, how do they find their way home, why do male birds pour their hearts out in song and why do female birds choose their mates by these efforts? These and many other questions are explored, with no final answers, but the raising of more questions. Why does the bower-bird build elaborate, artistic structures to impress potential mates? Do birds appreciate beauty itself? Well, you can't stop reading.

The book is extensively referenced for readers who want to pursue the topic in more depth. I only wish the author had included some illustrations--the basic anatomy of the avian brain would have been helpful. Or, some of the tools birds make. Or those incredible "bowers" that bower-birds build for their music and dance performances. Still, this is an outstanding book and I recommend it highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

Parts of four good books, but a disappointing whole

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for a review.

This book tries to do four things, with varying levels of success. While it has a lot of interesting material, my main complaint is that it's hard to read due to the abrupt shifts of topic and style, and also quite a lot of repetition.

Personally, my main interest is in the nature of animal intelligence. The book presents a lot of experimental results in this area, which are extremely interesting. However there is little serious discussion of the meaning of intelligence, it's just defined as ability to innovate. While that's certainly one aspect, it doesn't cover anything.

For example, the author discusses why Barbados bullfinches are so much smarter than the closely-related grassquit. She totally misses the irony when describing the difficulty of answering the question because while bullfinches are easy to catch, it's almost impossible to catch the "stupid" grassquit. Clearly there are different dimensions to intelligence. I thought of that in relation to turkeys, which the author lists among the least intelligent birds. While that may be true by some measures, I can testify from experience that it takes a lot more thought to hunt a turkey than a mammal or waterbird.

On a related not, the neuropsychology is discussed only in general, superficial terms. The author's interest is clearly behavioral.

The book does a much better job in the other three areas it covers. It is a fine account of how bird researchers conduct their work, showing the tedium, frustration, cleverness and occasional breakthrough. It's an inspiring, realistic account of actual science. The author also introduces us to many observers of birds in the wild. While this is excellent in communicating the excitement of serious birding (as opposed to the less intense birdwatching), the author does not do a good job of description. The reader never feels as if he or she is there.

Finally the book contains a lot of autobiography and travelogue of the author's global wanderings in search of birds and the people who study them. While a bit more description would have been welcome here as well, the stories themselves are interesting enough to stand on their own.

Overall, I found this hard to read, but with many rewarding parts. I recommend it to anyone interested in how scientists work or with a deep interest in birds. If intelligence is your main interest, you'll find some useful points in this, but too few and too superficial to satisfy.

Priceless read on exploring career alternatives to Corporate America

If you are seriously considering leaving Corporate America, McNeal II's book is a great start to explore where you stand in your current job vs. where you want to go. McNeal II's book goes deep. He shows you how to get to the point of living with a purpose and with happiness. Caught Between a Dream and a Job tries to help you bridge your current situation with your business dream. The book allows for much soul-searching. McNeal II has a religious touch, though he is non-intrusive. The book is very practical, has nice "to-do" summaries, and many self-tests. It connects well with the reader and avoids the loftiness of many other self-help books. I love the part in which McNeal II makes you think about the ten items that should be on your tombstone, thereby forcing you to think about purpose in your life. If you are still employed or are about to be let go, this book makes for a great read to help you start the right course. In my recently published career book on job loss, I highly recommend Caught Between a Dream and a Job for anybody facing the strategic decision of whether or not to leave Corporate America.

The book is very well written and informative. There are many techniques, ideas, priciples and strategies to help anyone interested in pursuing their dream of becoming their own CEO. After reading the book I believe not only in my dreams but am more confident in myself. The book gives encouragement and also serves as an outline to success. Helpful, Sincere, and Informative

There is no stable landscape here except the horizontal action of moving through. Landscape becomes story. In this extended tale of the idea of family, we find stand-ins for the father in the form of a hit man, Jim Morrison, and ultimately the unyielding road takes the place of the body. The Switching/Yard is at once the horizontal world of the birth table where babies are switched, the complex yard of the body where gender routinely shifts and switches, and the actual switching yard of the trains that run the inevitable tracks of this book.

About the Author

Jan Beatty is the author of three previous poetry collections: Red Sugar, Boneshaker, and Mad River, winner of the Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize. She is the recipient of the Creative Achievement Award in Literature from the Heinz Foundation, the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry, two fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and inclusion in The Best American Poetry 2013, among other honors. Beatty is cohost and producer of Prosody, a weekly radio program featuring the work of national writers. She is the director of the creative writing program at Carlow University.

Not all that enjoyable

Jan Beatty is a good poet; I have other books with very amusing and well-written poems (she's a professor, after all). Each book I've bought has become more coarse, and this one is too much for me, coupled with the confusing and annoying out-of-context punctuation marks. This time I wasn't amused either.

I just finished my first read. Might be the most math-heavy book in the whole series. It adds detail and accuracy to all the concepts previously explained.

The God Series provides with the perfect conceptual framework needed in order to figure out the 100% of reality. This book is the end of the series and therefore the end of the explanation of this conceptual framework. Now a new era begins and we need to develop the formal framework, figure out the details of it and relate it to our physical reality and to experiments - in order to convince the scientists we need to play their game a bit..

Pythagorean Illuminism: The Religion of Light

"How to Create the Universe" is the final installment in the reality revealing book series known as "The God Series", and it's absolutely spectacular. "The God Series" is a book series written by the preeminent authors of the Pythagorean Illuminati. These authors write under the pseudonyms of Mike Hockney, Michael Faust, and Adam Weishaupt, and all of their books can be found on Amazon.

The books written by the Pythagorean Illuminati are unlike any other books on this planet. These books do nothing less than describe, in rigorous mathematical and philosophical detail, the precise working of the universe, including the reason why the universe created humanity. No, I'm not messing with you, these books are that powerful. It is the 100% Truth that, within these books, you will find the reason for your existence.

What makes me so sure that the Pythagorean Illuminati speak the unadulterated, 100% Truth? That's simple. It's because the Illuminati back up every single thing they say with the only subject that no rational person could, or would, ever second guess, namely mathematics. That's right, the Pythagorean Illuminati PROVE what they say using the ONLY thing that can prove anything at all: mathematics. No other books can even come close to doing this; their authors are all irrational ignoramuses who completely lack the mathematical skill, knowledge and ability.

Any book that says that reality is anything other than 100% mathematics was written by a charlatan, plain and simple. In fact, the whole reason charlatans even exist is that humanity has no understanding of mathematics. The moment humanity Truly understands mathematics is the moment that humanity will be freed from charlatans and sophists. That moment can't come soon enough.

You might ask: What about science books though? Don't science books use mathematics to prove what they say? Don't scientists use math all of the time to describe the universe? The answer to those questions are a resounding NO! Scientists don't actually understand the first thing about mathematics, and the Pythagorean Illuminati will prove that to you beyond a shadow of a doubt as well, that is, if you choose to read their books.

You see, our contemporary scientists aren't free thinkers. They are 100% enthrall to the false philosophies of empiricism and materialism, and it's exactly these philosophies that hinder scientist's ability to think clearly. Empiricism and materialism are the philosophies of the human senses. The human senses, as we all well know, don't provide knowledge of anything. All they do is present us with information. It is up to us to use our intelligence = reason to sort through all of the information our senses present to us. We gain knowledge by using our reason, not by using our senses. Scientists have a real hard time understanding this simple Truth, and it's this misunderstanding which causes science to spout insane gibberish concerning humanity and the universe.

So, the books by the Pythagorean Illuminati are unique exactly because they are 100% mathematical. The Pythagorean Illuminati are the only ones who know what mathematics is ontologically. In fact, it might be said that one of the purposes of "The God Series" is to reveal the Truth of mathematics to the planet Earth, and these books do exactly that.

This brings me to the newest (and last) book in "The God Series" titled: "How to Create the Universe". "How to Create the Universe" is a book that teaches you exactly what its title says. In this book, you will learn how the Monadic Collective creates the entire spacetime universe out of just one ingredient: reason.

As you read this book, you will see that, although the universe might seem completely miraculous, it is anything but. No, the universe has nothing whatsoever to do with miracles (whether of the religious or scientific varieties). The universe, in actuality, is the perfect expression of reason, and reason is diametrically opposed to miracles.

As this book takes the reader, step by step, through the process of creating an entire universe out of nothing but reason, we are shown the True importance of having and using the correct mathematical grid to explain reality. The authors demonstrate that if you use the wrong mathematical grid to explain reality, then you will explain nothing at all.

This book shows that the correct grid for explaining and describing reality is the mathematical grid known as the Fourier-Gauss-Riemann grid. It's this grid, not the Cartesian coordinate plane, that describes reality, and it's this grid, in its entirety, that ontological mathematicians use to study reality. The full complex Fourier-Gauss-Riemann mathematical grid is THE ontological grid, which means it's the only grid that depicts reality.

As the authors of "How to Create the Universe" say: "How can you become God unless you adopt God's viewpoint, and transcend your fallible, unreliable, limited humanity?". This means that if you want to Truly understand reality, then you MUST think about it 100% mathematically, period. The only way you can think about reality 100% mathematically is if you are using the correct mathematical grid, and scientists emphatically aren't.

Learning about how the universe is created means learning about The God Equation, and this book gives the student of ontological mathematics more information concerning The God Equation than ever before. In this book, the authors teach us even more about the perfect analytic cosine and sine waves generated by The God Equation. They show us the relationship between circles and these waves, and in doing this, we begin to understand why circles and spheres are so fundamental to our universe. These infinite and perfect Euler circles are our ultimate reality; you can't get more real than them.

Each of these Euler circles has a point that flows around the circumference of the circle. As these points eternally trace around the circles, they generate sine and cosine waves of all possible frequencies. These perfectly analytic and 100% mathematical wave pairs are all orthogonal to each other. It's exactly these waves that comprise the perfect and eternal frequency domain of mind, and it is this eternal frequency domain that begets the spacetime domain of what we mistakenly refer to as matter. As these books prove, what we call matter is actually collective thoughts = low frequency sine and cosine waves that are at every angle to each other except ninety degrees. This is the 100% mathematical reality that the greatest geniuses in history have uncovered. Reason alone is what led them here because reason IS the universe.

This book is absolutely packed with information of the most profound kind. We get a beautiful way of picturing a monad: as a light bubble, and speaking of light, this book delves into it very deeply. In this book the Illuminati explain something they briefly spoke about in an earlier book of "The God Series", namely, that light can be split. What it can be split into is a sine and a cosine wave. If we combine this mathematical Truth with the above mathematical Truth of the frequency domain, we find that the frequency domain is a domain of pure Light. To me, this is absolutely amazing and beautiful, and I try to picture it in my mind all of the time.

I loved this book and could go on and on about it. The bottom line though is that if you enjoy the books by the Pythagorean Illuminati, then you will definitely enjoy this book. The authors writing is sharper than ever. These authors are doing nothing less than explaining, in rigorous mathematical detail, the exact workings of the universe. They do this so smoothly and efficiently that even someone new to this information (such as I was) can get a solid grasp on it simply by reading their books.

Each one of their books has inspired me to become a better human being, and each one of their books has fanned the flames in my belly to the point that I now have an inferno burning deep inside of me. This fire wants to revalue all values. It wants to burn this repugnant old world order of irrationally, selfishness, brutality, insanity, and psychopathic "leaders" to the ground and replace it with a Global Pythagorean Meritocratic Republic, a.k.a. The New World Order of reason, community, integrity, and equal opportunity for all. A Global Pythagorean Meritocratic Republic is the exact society depicted on the show "Star Trek", and it's exactly this type of world I want to help make a reality.

So this brings me to the last thing I would like to write about. If you are rational (and by rational I mean that you know 100% that mathematics created humanity and not the other way around) then you must read these books. I hate to end every one of my book reviews with gloom and doom but I feel I must.

The reason I write these book reviews is because I KNOW that the hyperrational philosophy contained within these books is the only way humanity will be able to cure itself of its collective insanity. I write these reviews so that other rational people will have a better chance of noticing the books on Amazon. If you're a rational person reading this book review, then it's vital for you to understand that you're needed.

You already know that this world is in deep trouble. Irrationallity, insanity, and brutality permeate the planet, and it's getting worse, not better. The Earth needs you and ALL rational people to stand up and fight back against the psychopaths who are hell bent on destroying the planet and everything on it. If we, as rational people, don't get organized and fight back then the world's fate is sealed. The books by the Pythagorean Illuminati are what will get us organized. Once we are all finally on the same page as to what needs to be done (the page of Pythagorean Illuminism), then we can at last begin to Truly fight back and, once and for all, save this benighted species known as humanity.
