About the Author
Louis P. Pojman (1935-2005) was Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at the United States Military Academy and a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. He received an M.A. and Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary/Columbia University. He was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Copenhagen and a Rockefeller Fellow at Hamburg University. He received his D.Phil. in Philosophy from Oxford University in 1997.His first position was at the University of Notre Dame, after which he taught at the University of Texas at Dallas. Later, at the University of Mississippi, he served for three years as Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion. In 1995, he became Professor of Philosophy at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He most recently was Visiting Professor at Brigham Young University in Utah and Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Oxford University. Pojman won several research and teaching awards, including the Burlington Northern Award for Outstanding Teaching and Scholarship (1988) and the Outstanding Scholar/Teacher in the Humanities at the University of Mississippi (1994). He wrote in the areas of philosophy of religion, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy and authored or edited more than 30 books and 100 articles. Louis Pojman passed away in 2005.

Michael Rea is Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Center for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame, where he has taught since 2001. He earned his B.A. at UCLA in 1991 and his PhD at the University of Notre Dame in 1996. He is has written or edited more than ten books and thirty articles in metaphysics and the philosophy of religion, and has given numerous lectures in the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Russia, China, and Iran.

Well Rounded

Many of the books I've read on the subject of the philosophy of religion have been very one sided. It was refreshing to read a book that has various viewpoints covered from the exact words of the philosophers themselves. Many of the difficult subjects that theists and atheists grapple with are covered thoroughly from great minds from both sides. This is an excellent book that will forever have a home on a book shelf.

As for the content: the class was one of my favorites and if this teacher chose this book, it must have been for a good reason.

awesome anthology

I was required to get this book for my class, and it did a good job of covering a variety of viewpoints across many time periods and continents. Good choice if you are interested, and as always, the price is better than anywhere else.

Frost Fire is a great addition to the series!

Frost Fire is the sixth book in Kailin Gow's extremely addictive Frost series. The story here picks up immediately after the end of Midnight Frost, whereby the war between Summer and Winter Fey is over, and the Fey are united under Breena and Kian. The only problem with the happily ever after scenario is that the twin suns of Feyland have gone dark. And Feyland is slowly dying.
A group of determined individuals sets out with the blessing of the palace to restore the suns of Feyland, and for most, to use the quest to fulfil other needs they have not yet met. Logan, Shasta, Rodney, Rose and Alistair set out on a long and dangerous journey that tests not only their will to put right what is wrong, but whether they can conquer their own fears and inadequacies in time to save Feyland and themselves.
I must have been one of a very few people that was disappointed with the predecessor of this book, Midnight Frost. I was hoping that this story would put back some of the sparkle and high adventure I had been longing for in Midnight Frost, but never really felt the book delivered.
Frost Fire is definitely a return to the adventure and comeraderie I had so enjoyed in the other books of the Frost Series! The slow decay of Feyland teamed with the desperation of both the King and Queen of United feyland, and the band of knights who set off to save it made a powerful base from which to begin, and reeled me straight back into the ongoing story.
The adventure plot of the book also worked well, and the trek across a vastly different and sorrowful Feyland was suspenseful and had a very different feel to the other books in the series.
For me, the only (and very small) gripes I had was that firstly; another love triangle is set up almost immediately, and this felt a little forced. It may have been better to allow the characters a little time to grow together first before plunging right in.
Secondly, there were a few editing and grammar mistakes that could have been caught by a more thorough edit before release.
But these were very minor, and overall the book was one of the strongest in the series so far. Can't wait to read Spring Frost!

love the story, but the Proof Reader needs to be fired.

there were small errors in the other books..but this one OMG.. at one point there were so many errors it got confusing.. Logan would be talking and saying somethign about LOGAN.. when he meant one of other characters.. Breena was called BRIAN at one point..
but other than the story line is enjoyable just don't get lost ..

Die Liebe zu Laura dient dabei lediglich als Deckmantel der – damals als s�ndhaft geltenden – Ruhmsucht, sowie als Point de D�part f�r ein in Wahrheit streng durchkomponiertes �sthetisches Werk, mit dem sich Petrarca deutlich von den im Mittelalter vorherrschenden Liebesdiskursen zu distanzieren vermag. Im Folgenden werde ich eruieren, wie die Figur der Laura und die scheinbar unerf�llte Liebe zu ihr als Instrument der Selbstinszenierung geschickt eingesetzt werden, ohne welches Petrarca das Streben nach Gloria nicht in diesem Ma�e h�tte entfalten k�nnen.

Dazu werde ich zun�chst auf die Entstehung der Laura eingehen, die bereits im Secretum als auch im Bucolicum Carmen erw�hnt wird, und sowohl ihr Erscheinen als auch ihre Funktion im Canzoniere detailliert analysieren. Im Anschluss daran werde ich anhand von Beispieltexten Petrarcas Egozentrismus durch die affetti contrari demonstrieren, sowie die Rahmenkonzeption des Canzoniere genauer beleuchten, bei der wir eine deutliche Akzentuierung der Gloria im In Morte Teil vorfinden werden. Abschlie�end werde ich Petrarca kurz im Kontext anderer literarischer Liebeskonzeptionen seiner Zeit, respektive der provenzalischen Troubadourslyrik, der Scuola Siciliana und des Dolce Stil Novo, situieren und zeigen, dass Petrarcas Narzissmus und seine Selbststilisierung im Canzoniere ihn als Wegbereiter einer neuen Epoche, des Rinascimento, auszeichnen.

David Lauber (PhD, Princeton Theological Seminary) is associate professor of theology at Wheaton College. Tries to entertain and teach, succeeds at neither.

This book tries to be two things: a guide to interesting areas of mathematics, and a playful children's book involving a cutesy cat character Penrose. It fails on both counts because it doesn't tie them together. The cat is just a transparent attempt to grab children's interest, and this heavy-handed gimmick fails miserably. The math is simply presented, having nothing to do with a coherent story. The result is ineffective and uninteresting.

Contrast this with Malba Tahan's "The Man who Counted" and "The Number Devil." There is no comparison.

I would love to see the concept in "The Man who Counted" taken much further, integrating higher mathematics into a real story. Unfortunately, this isn't it.

Math tales

I'm not sure the intended audience of this book. The pictures are too minimal for early elementary, with content far above them. The grades for whom the content is appropriate would probably find the stories unappealing. They didn't catch my interest either. To its credit, the book has some interesting sidebars and activities for teacher use. My resources would not have been lacking if I'd passed on this purchase.

Fractals and Googols. . . and Penrose

Theoni Pappas has written several books of mathematical 'tales' including the well-know Penrose books.
"Fractals, Googols and other Mathematical Tales" includes a total of 22 topical tales.

The table of contents helpfully includes information as to the topic discussed in that tale, as the chapter titles, 'Dr. Spacemath', for example, do not always indicate what the topic is!
Unfortunately, if you already have the Penrose books, you will find that at least 9 of the chapters in "Fractals" are repeated from the Penrose books. Several of these have been condensed and it seems as though the author's commentary has been added to some in a purple side-bar in keeping with the style of the rest of the book.

While the Penrose books are clearly written for and to those new to the world of mathematics, "Fractals" includes small-print, purple side-bars that seem to be written to a parent/teacher.
As in the Penrose books, there is a section in the very back that includes solutions to puzzles and challenges posted in the book.

We are big fans of the Penrose books and Theoni Pappas, and while 'Fractals' does indicate topics in the table of contents, I wish that all these books had a good index to make it easier to find tales and activities that are relevant to a student's current topic of study.
I was also disappointed that so many of the tales in "Fractals" are repeats from the Penrose books.

However, if you do not already have Penrose, this would be a great book to introduce you to Pappas' unique approach to mathematical tales.
