Starman Jones is a great, smoothe flowing story from start to end

I have to say...RAH's "juvenile" stories are some of the most enjoyable stories i have ever read. period. And i have only started reading Scifi and esspecially RAH within the last 3yrs. And i am 40 now. Starman Jones is a great , smoothe flowing story from start to end. I loved this book. you should definatley read this one. Personaly, my favorites out of some of my favorites are....Starman Jones, Glory Road, The Star Beast, and Tunnel in the Sky. But like i said , all his Juvenile's are really good, and should be given to your sons to read when they become a young adult. Hopefully , these will never be required reading in school, and continue to be amazing books you or your kids simply discover, and pass on , so the important lessons in them will not be lost on "homework".

Heinlein's timeless writing: Still applicable in today's world.

My introduction to Heinlein was Star Beast. However any of the books in this group of his books targeting the young is good. For me his writing is timeless and still as philosophically relavent today as when I first read them when I was in my teens. The reader will find him or herself wrapped in the story and the challenges of the characters just as much as reading good writing aimed at a so called more mature audience. I can't recommend these books enough especially as an introduction to the entire genre of science fiction.

Robert Heinlein is timeless inspiration.

I grew up reading Heinlein's "Juvenile series" (incl Space Cadet, Star Beast, Between Planets, etc...) but this one was always my favorite. Some of the tech described is still surprisingly valid like trains with magnetic levitation and starships using what is routinely described as a "jump' or 'foldspace' drive for interstellar travel. When you consider that Heinlein wrote these books for a teen audience in the 40's and 50's it's clear that these are really remarkable reading. The updated forward was a welcome surprise too.

Excellent Addition to Elite Series

Finland at War 1939-45, # 141 in Osprey's Elite series, is an excellent introduction to the role of the Finnish Army in the Second World War. Authors Philip Jowett and Brent Snodgrass demonstrate a firm grip of this subject and provide a wealth of useful and hard-to-find information on the Finns. This volume belongs on the bookshelves of anyone seriously interested in the Eastern Front.

The opening section spends about 12 pages outlining the chronology of the three wars that Finland fought in the period 1939-45; the 1939-40 Winter War and 1941-44 Continuation War against the Soviet Union and the 1944-45 Lapland War against the Germans. However the chronology section actually has a fair amount of detail and provides a good introduction to the subject. The heart of the volume lies in the 25-page section which discusses the organization of the Finnish army, covering all the major branches as well as paramilitary formations such as the Civil Guard and Foreign Volunteers. A brief section discusses tactics, including the use of "motti" encirclement attacks and snipers. A final section discusses weapons, including small arms, machineguns, anti-tank weapons and artillery (unfortunately, mortars were omitted). Overall, there is a wealth of information in this thin volume and it is one of the better of Osprey's Elite titles.

Eight pages of color plates by artist Raffaele Ruggeri depict the Finnish military and para-military forces from 1939-45. The photographs in the volume are also very good and most have not been printed in English-language books before. Perhaps the only area that gets a bit skimped on is in the areas of training and higher staff functions at corps-level, but this is understandable given the size restraints. Overall, a superb volume.

Great overview

This book is very well written and easy to read. It gives a very good overview of the Finnish military during WWII. If you don't know about heroic little Finland, and their fight for survival against Russia, then you are missing some great inspirational history. I consider this book a must-have for the Finnish military history buff.

A good primer for the newly graduated Engineer or individuals just trying to increase their knowledge. Easy to read and current. The sections on Multi-layer leaves many unanswered questions which leaves one wanting more information than is provided.

Needs a good editor...

This book needs a whole lot of serious editing. I was a trifle miffed by the poor grammer throughout the book, poor spelling, typographic errors in places and generally poor presentation.
The book also has sections which seem totally out of place. There is a chapter on electronic components which seems to be totally random. Maybe the author had a spare book chapter lying around on his desk and decided to put it in, maybe he got his filing mixed up and accidentally sent another book's chapter to the publisher...
Overall I'm not impressed.

Works Great

I had trouble passing the Hazmat test like 90% of the people who take it. If you buy this book, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS, and take the test, i almost guarentee you will pass it. I passed the test with 45/50 when I took it the 3rd and last time... I failed it the first 2 times because I didn't get hazmat. Now I am actually interested in it because this book could actually teach me. Recommended VERY HIGHLY.

Really helpful, but not everything you'll need to pass

I took my hazmat awareness and ops test last night and expect to pass both. There were several questions on the test that were straight from this book. I honed in lots of other details as I researched questions that I missed or weren't sure about as I took the practice tests, which resulted in more correct (I hope!) answers. Our class didn't get any practice tests to get a feel for the questions, so recoginizing familiar questions was a big boost for confidence in the test. This book won't teach you hazmat, but can help you get a better grade if you follow the process. G'luck!

Get This Book and You Will Pass

When I originally took the Firefighter I and Haz Mat Ops tests, I used instructor created study guides and the text book. I struggled with the Haz Mat Ops class and passed by the skin of the skin of my teeth. Needless to say I was extremely nervous when it came to exam time. I had heard about this book, but was unable to get it in time. I figured I would go with the study materials I had and give it the best shot. Unfortunately, my best wasn't good enough and I ended up failing the Haz Mat Ops and the Awareness portion of the Firefighter I tests.

Determined to make my reattempt my last attempt, I immediately ordered this book. For the time it arrived and until the day of the test, this was my Bible. I carried it everywhere I went and ran through it cover to cover. I was surprised when I saw the same questions on the exam. Some weren't even paraphrased; they were literally lifted directly from the book.

I was completely floored when I got my results and I didn't just pass, I dominated the tests. My Haz Mat Ops exam score was 94.1% and the Awareness test was 96.31% (which was 3 questions away from a perfect score). This book is worth its weight in gold. I recommend it to all the Firefighter I students at school. If you are nervous or concerned about the Haz Mat Ops exam, get this book. I just wished I’d had it the first time around.

Solid ,and very helpful

This book is great for beginner and non-beginner alike. Its modular approach not only takes the boredom out of memorization, but aids in retention of vocab and makes it easy for use as a reference guide. It's quite enjoyable. I recommend it to the beginner and someone (like me) who's looking to brush on ages of non-use of francais, ce livre est tres magnifique!

Solid, Comprehensive and Well-Organized - Top Notch!

This is a great book. You can look inside to see the content, so I won't repeat that here. What I will say is that I agree with the other reviewers on the detailed thematic approach, depth and value of this type of organization when memorization is often difficult and tedious. Another tip I didn't see, but I think you might appreciate is recording yourself or a native speaker using a digital recorder and making your own flashcards color-coded by thematic area. A spreadsheet with a category sort key and another priority sort key is another useful way to practice. It depends how quickly you want to learn. However, this book does a lot of organizing for you, so it speeds up retention, review, etc.

As good as they come!!!!

I have studied French for several years now, and I know most of the vocabulary included in this book. Despite that, I found useful the way in which it is divided, that is, in thematic categories, because those categories allow me to search for the specific vocabulary I need when I need it. That feature saves time and it is very practical. The task of learning new vocabulary can be quite tedious, but this book makes it more approachable, by allowing the reader to choose what themes he is going to study, and in what order.

I don't regret buying it, because I think it is a thoroughly useful reference book. Due to that, I recommend "Mastering French Vocabulary: A Thematic Approach" to you :)
