Julius Caesar is a key link between Shakespeare's histories and his tragedies. Unlike the Caesar drawn by Plutarch in a source text, Shakespeare's Caesar is surprisingly modern: vulnerable and imperfect, a powerful man who does not always know himself. The open-ended structure of the play insists that revealing events will continue after the play ends, making the significance of the history we have just witnessed impossible to determine in the play itself. John D. Cox's introduction discusses issues of genre, characterization, and rhetoric, while also providing a detailed history of criticism of the play. Appendices provide excerpts from important related works by Lucretius, Plutarch, and Montaigne.

About the Author
William Shakespeare was born on April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children their older daughter, Susanna, and the twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare s only son, died in childhood.

The bulk of Shakespeare s working life was spent, not in Stratford, but in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He had a successful career in London as a playwright and actor and was a shareholder in the acting company the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He produced most of his plays between 1589 and 1613. Sometime between 1610 and 1613, Shakespeare is thought to have retired from the stage and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616.

Buy the Arden Second Series Instead

The play--which I have produced four times--is more wonderful than I can describe. It comes from the years when Shakespeare discovered his own sexuality, and discovered that perhaps he did not have to live under the shadow of his friend Marlowe--and his inventiveness and poetry mushroomed. The low rating comes from the low level of scholarship associated with this addition. The careful work that R. W. David did for the Arden Second Series has been discarded, and the Introduction is frothy and gossipy. The editing of the text itself is bad. The basis for the play is mankind's expulsion from the garden of Eden. H. R. Woudhuysen must not understand the play very well, because he eliminated Costard's joke "Gardon! Remuneration!" which condenses the idea of our punishment in being thrown out of the garden into two words. Woudhuysen went to, I think, the Third Folio, to find Costard saying "Guerdon! Remuneration!" which of course eliminates the joke and mars the play. I regret criticizing anybody else's hard work, but the Arden Second Series edition is more reliable and informative.

A practical, easy-to-carry edition of Julius Caesar

Obviously, Shakespeare is a genius and Julius Caesar is one of his most famous plays so I don't think I need to reveiw the content. This Pelican edition is what I'm reviewing. I like having the plays in individual books because the complete Shakespeare edition are way to bulky to carry around with you. This edition has the line numbers, which is important if you are reading with a group. It has some general introduction about the Elizabethan theater, Shakespeare himself, and the play. The font is big enough to read comfortably. This is a good edition for students and it's the one I prefer to carry around with me.

Nice Edition

Obviously, I am not going to review the merits of the play. Unless it is demanded by the Plebeian mob.

I am happy I purchased this edition in paperback. The Folger Library has produced a very pleasant read, with nice-sized, very readable typeface, and a well-designed layout for the book. I'm glad I did not order the Kindle version as this quarto-like version sat comfortably in my hands, bending with just the right ply. The text of the play sits on the right page with explanatory notes on the left. So if you are helped by explanatory notes on the language--and I occasionally am--you will probably find them easy to scan while reading. The edition also includes some engraving-like reproductions on the left page, near the bottom. The representations often echo certain events as the plot unfolds, sometimes sufficiently to evoke further interest and consideration, other times seeming to be more perfunctorily-placed and uninteresting.

For me, reading this edition was a decidedly superior experience to reading plays in other paperback versions (like Signet) as well as the Kindle. I look forward to reading other plays in the Folger editions.

I absolutely LOVE Mark Hayes' arrangements

I absolutely LOVE Mark Hayes' arrangements! They incorporate a lot of great jazz harmonies and rhythms, without EVER losing the heart and sound of the original song. Some of them are CRAZY difficult to play, and take a LOT of work to learn, but the results are well worth it. This book is definitely NOT for the beginner, though. It requires intermediate to advanced skills to play these multi-layered and complex arrangements.

I particularly liked the lively arrangement of "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" with a little "When We All Get To Heaven" thrown in for good measure. The wistful "I Will Arise and Go to Jesus" is really beautiful! Really, there is NOTHING in this book that is not simply outstanding!

Excellent Advanced Sacred Solos!

As the other reviewers have said, this book is excellent and truly advanced. Yet, it's not so advanced that an advanced pianist will have to work months on each song. The arrangements have a lot of grandeur, and often flowing sweetness, too. This book is neither a boring copycat of every other book nor a compilation of bizarre arrangements full of discords. It's fresh - incredible to hear and play.

Never Judge a Book by Its Cover or the Title on It

The title of Nancy Aikens' book, The Biological Origins of Art, seems a bit misleading. As it was published in 1998, I thought I would learn of some new and exciting scientific discovery of why humans feel (and have found for tens of thousands of years -- as we know thus far) the need to express themselves through imagery. It appears Nancy Aikens approached the subject matter in a more research-oriented manner in that she dryly reiterates what has already been evaluated and written on human behavior and emotion in general, instead of digesting and reiterpreting the material referenced in her Notes in an attempt to enlighten the reader with some new and interesting concepts and discoveries. Furthermore, by the time I finally read about the "origins of art," which appears some halfway through the book and is difficult to get to in a conscious state, I was deeply disappointed. Overall, there were a few interesting points, but these points were quotes, experiments or ideas of other authors. I failed to find Nancy Aikens book compelling and regret not being able to recommend it. Unfortunately, I felt the text was not as original as the title.

The Biological Origins of Art

Nancy Aiken's book provides empirical evidence for why the arts are an essential aspect of our evolved biological nature. Aiken's claim is that when we have a strong response to the arts we are usually engaging far more than topical issues. We are engaging the ancient parts of the brain that have to do with our survival. The fight, flight or freeze responses are at the core of being alive and as we participate in these experience -- through the arts -- we are making deep connections to the old parts of the brain. This may explain, not only the strong emotions we may have, but also how the arts are a vehicle for making us conscious of our essential human nature -- that we cannot always put into words. I highly recommend Nancy Aiken's book for its ability to offer an understanding of our biological responses to the arts, without destroying the unique and profoundly important quality of the art experience itself.

Doctoral thesis for Dissanayake fans

There is terrific information in this book for the true art 'n' biology geek. It does suffer from the academic form of the doctoral thesis, but it connects lots of interesting studies with theory from art and ethology. The cover is a dead give-away at just how non-sexy the book is going to be, but if you loved Homo Aestheticus and crave more on this topic, Ms Aiken's work will scratch your itch until Ellen D's next book comes out.

Clear instructions but mundane jewelry

I ordered this book because I wanted clear step by step photos of the bead crochet process. That it does. But you can obtain the information online or from less expensive beading magazines. I thought I'd be getting an in depth view of this wonderful craft--like info on how to string beads to create patterns.

When I tried to return the book I found that the seller (though the book is from the US) is in Great Britain! They are called "The Book Depository." This is the response I got when I emailed them:
"We are an online seller so for us items are not being held on site and the information we have been given doesn't give much more details regarding the contents of this items we sell. I am very sorry we could not be of more help."

They did eventually refund my money.
