A great resource for designer and design researchers

I was using Krippendorffs Semantic Turn over the past two years in my curriculum to teach design theory in different context, at Universities in Europe and North America and the response of the students was always great.
I appreciate Kripendorff's deep insight into contemporary developments and the discourse formation in design and the models he proposes to use.
His trajectory of artificiality, he has developed in his book is a great metaphor to frame and conceptualize some important developments in the design professions. I could imagine, because also some students told me, that this book is in some parts complex to understand, but it is also one of the exceptional readings on a theoretical which reframes the design professions for the future. I think it is a must for designers and the once who teaches design, even if we don't agree with all the statements made. It is also a great starting point to get involved in a theoretical design discourse.

Enlightening read

My introduction to John Barnes came through my physical therapist who was using some of the techniques, developed by Barnes, to treat my injuries. As she worked on me, she talked of attending one of Barnes' retreats, his treatment methods, the retreat agenda, etc. It all sounded so interesting and I asked if she knew whether he had written any books. She recommended that I take the clinic copy of "Healing Ancient Wounds" to read. I agreed, though fearing it might be too technical for me to really get into. Was I wrong!! From the opening paragraph I was hooked! I hated to put the book down, and devoured it in a weekend. It was easy to read and understand, and was packed with information about the bodies' fascia system and how it relates to the entire body's workings. I wanted, so badly, to highlight portions as I read, but knew I had to return the book to the clinic. As I neared the end of the text, I decided I had to have a copy for myself, and ordered my own book through Amazon. I consider this to be a valuable reference/resource book as I deal with the pain and dis-ease in my body. I hope to some day be able to attend one of Barnes' seminars and experience the healing therapy of MFR.

Do I say WOW now or later? - or both?

When I was first introduced to Myofascial Release (as taught by John Barnes), I had to know more. I talked my therapist into loaning me this book and read it in less than 24 hours. I was fascinated. As I read it, I knew I had to have a copy of the book for myself, so I ordered it from Amazon. I have read the book a total of 3 times now and find something new in it every time I read it. I also find that I can pick it up and open it to any page and find words that I need to hear at that moment. Recently I had the privilege of receiving treatment from the amazing therapists and John Barnes himself in his Sedona, AZ Myofascial Release (MFR) Treatment Center. It was an awesome experience. Before receiving MFR treatments from my local therapist, I couldn't do my grocery shopping on my feet. I was shopping for a wheelchair when I discovered Myofascial Release and have since climbed up into three mountains. Needless to say, this has changed my life!

not what I thought it would be

I purchased this book after attending my first MFR seminar last year. All I can say is WOW!! But hold on. It's not an impressed "wow". It's more like "I can't believe I paid 50.00 for a book that is one long advertisement of how wonderful John Barnes is. Every page is dripping with conceit. This author hasn't written anything worth reading in this book. No anatomy, no science, no technique. In fact the author wrote very little of this book himself. The entire book is a compilation of letters from past clients and MFR trained therapists, mostly female, who write about how John was the missing link in their healing journey. If I wanted to hear about total stranger's medical problems, I would just stand in the longest line at the grocery store. I noticed that Amazon marketplace has some used copies for over 80.00 for sale. Anyone who pays 80.00 for this book is being totally ripped off. In fact anyone paying the list price is too. Do yourself a favor and save your money, unless of course you need to read in his own words and the words of his patients, how wonderful John Barnes is.

Very well explained!

I'm a 2200 player who took up playing d4 this year. I wanted a good line against both the Grunfeld and King's Indian (I've also worked through Schandorff's excellent books). Svetushkin's book really hit the spot: It has detailed analysis with a very large number of the authors new ideas so that one could definitely use this book to prepare against top opponents. But the book goes from being good to being superb because of the wonderful explanation. Each part of the repertoire has a "Main Ideas" section, a "Step by Step" section which is the core repertoire, followed by Illustrative games for just that section. Many of the games are the authors. The strategic ideas are explained very well (including pointing out how a typical playing often botches a certain position). The author , a strong GM, talks from many years experience (by looking in Chessbase I can see he is very active) in these lines and put a lot of addition research. Often he points out the ideas of other authors and explains why he agrees or disagrees with their assessment. The best way I have found to learn an opening is to have a strong player who has played the lines all their life explain it, including all the tricks, tactics, errors. That is what this book feels like. I will not be surprised if we see an increase in the popularity of the 3.f3 anti-grunfeld following this great book.

Techno-thriller in the Pacific

In the newest techno-thriller in this series, our heroes return to help the government of the Phillipines, fight off the Chinese as the Phillipines take over a set of small islands that surround a major oil field in the Pacific Ocean. While the overall strategic elements of this novel are kind of flimsy, the fun is in the combat sequences and for that reason this book is worthy of a four star rating.

Jake Slate and Pierre Renard are back in the swing of things. Pierre is creating havoc as he gets his mercenary navy to be paid enormous amounts of money to - as he puts it - rearrange national boundaries; while at the same time he is using Jake Slate to captain one submarine, which Jake first has to steal from Malaysia. One convoluted step after another is described until we get the penultimate battle between a Chinese naval task force and Jake's submarine; Filipino ground forces; and a surprise additional combatant who ends up joining the mercenary team at the end of the book.

When I read a series of novels I look for several aspects. Firstly, the novel has to stand on its own as a good story; secondly, with many of the characters repeating, there has to be some growth in them as they live their lives on the pages of these books; and finally, the story has to make sense. This book fulfills most of those requirements. The overall plot requires a bit of suspension of disbelief but not too much; the action sequences are fun to read; and the interactions of the characters are somewhat believable; On the other hand, I found very little growth in the characters in this book. Pierre is completely unchanged. Jake makes some noises about growing closer to deciding if he believes in a god or not; Olivia MacDonald makes a cameo appearance, and that's basically all that happens. To me, that part was rather disappointing as I was hoping for more.

If you have not read anything in this series yet, you can start here. There are references to the events that took place in the first five novels of the series, but there is not a place where you had to know the past to understand what is going on in the present. I think the author does a good job of toeing the line on this point and deserves kudos for it. The main enjoyment here is reading the action sequences and especially how cerebral and technologically involved is a submarine battle. For the vast majority of us who have never served on submarines, that part is a lot of fun to read.

So, I decided to give this book a four star rating because I really liked it, but deducted one star for the reasons stated above.

Best Rogue story of the series!

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the author's work (both the Rogue series and his collection of stories about integrating beasts with humans), but this one is by far my favorite. Monteith's writing has really matured, providing rich villians, tense action, occasional humor, all combined with cutting edge naval technology.

The last of the above really made this story for me. The use of the rail gun, coupled with other recent naval technology, added a dimension to the story above the typical submarine yarn. Also enjoyed the introduction of what is hopefully a recurring character in the Australian Cahill.

Good writing, fast action, great story. As enjoyable as Dale Brown, Tom Clancy, and Jeff Edwards. Looking forward to the next one!

Can one Submarine really defeat the Chinese Navy?

Another excellent novel in the Rogue Series by John Monteith. We join our naval friends aboard another submarine with the intent that this time they are going to assist the Philippines in regaining control of certain island areas that are rich in oil. The problem is that China has control of the sea in this area and control of some of the land masses and island reefs. Between them and Malaysia the Philippines has trouble getting a foothold.

Jake, Henri and Remy are going to steal another submarine and go to work for the Philippines. The sub they are going to steal is from Malaysia so that anything they do will appear to China as though Malaysia is the one coming after them.

The book opens with the take over of a submarine while it is at sea. There is not one shot fired, not one bomb released nor is there anyone who dies because of violence, yet the submarine is taken over and the Malaysian crew is taken captive. How can they do this? Well, read the opening of the book and be surprised by how simple it seemed.

Now Jake has to come to terms with how his work in being the captain of a submarine inflicts death and damage to others. Jake is becoming more and more bothered by the killing of others. He is starting to really struggle with it and to struggle with whether there is a God or not. I'm particularly interested in his challenge to find faith in a higher being. He is struggling, but he knows that something is out there, an intelligent designer, but who is He?

Jake has developed a couple of weapons that allow him to disable other vessels without actually blowing them up in one torpedo shot. He has developed a "slow kill" torpedo that actually gives the opponent a chance to abandon ship before it will sink. That is a humane thing to do, but will it cost Jake his life and that of his friends? While they wait for the other warship to sink it might have just enough time to launch an attack against his submarine, and they will.

Again, John Monteith gives us a thrilling naval combat novel that goes into great detail about weapons, submarines, tactics and the personal side of the human psyche as men have to come to terms with the actions that they take.

One can subscribe to a totally "environmental" etiology of schizophrenia. One can subscribe to a totally genetic induction. The evidence piled up since the 1940s (and before) supporting the "diathesis-stress" model suggests otherwise... however politically incorrect it may be to suggest that family dynamics and confusing communication have a significant -- if incomplete -- role. This, and several other little gems from the '50s, '60s and '70s (from authors like Gregory Bateson, Aaron Esterson, Jules Henry, Don D. Jackson and Theodore Lidz) described the often subtle family behaviors and communication styles common in the families of origin of psychotic spectrum patients with genetic predispositions for hyper-sensitivity, reduced neural linkage from the pre-frontal cortices to the limbic system, and diminished trans-hemispheric connectivity decades before those genetic (and epigentic?) factors were either identified or understood. If we can let go of the black-and-white, nature-or-nurture thinking, replace that "or" with an "and," and get up out of the common cultural, dualistic box, we may be able to help patients with such disorders to climb up out of their own boxes without having to =blame= anyone.
