Must have book in your health library

I find myself referring back to this book so often and when I do I appreciate the knowledge Dr.Atkins really had. Considering the book was printed back in 1998 he was years ahead of the present day medical community.
For instance he knew that following a low sodium diet really missed the whole point when related to reducing blood pressure. Blood pressure medicine often only made the underlying cause only worse ( see Drug Muggers: Which Medications Are Robbing Your Body of Essential Nutrients--and Natural Ways to Restore Them by Suzy Cohen (Feb 15, 2011) for cross references. Often over-looked by the medical establishment was the need for potassium in the diet. Also, potassium from supplements were a waste of effort since OTC pills only contain 3% of the RDA. He realized the need to eat the proper foods for this important nutrient.
When's the last time you've heard of the forgotten Vitamin K. If you're like me,probably once or twice. Learn why it's so important and what foods contain it.
Turmeric the spice, is popular these days but learn why it's rather weak for therapeutic use and why he recommended Curcumin instead.
The list of interesting health topics and nutrient related information is truly astounding.
I'm glad I own this important book.

Dr Atkins and JR Books ... both a classic!

JR Books delivers. Found this first edition hard bound book from JR Books. It was promptly delivered and was as described. I fact, it was in brand new, perfect condition just as it would have been back in 1998. This book by Dr Atkins, God rest his soul, is like a vitamin bible and so much more. This is the fourth copy I have purchased through the years as it is informative and easy to read. I have given out several copies in paperback and decided to find one in hardcover for my library.

Moreover, it has enabled me to overcome many ailments and discontinue dangerous pharmaceuticals by solving and eliminating the problem, not just masking over them. These are no small maladies. Along with using his diet books and this book, I have overcome diabetes, obesity, chronic inflammation, insomnia, and others. Of course there are no miracle cures, hard work and elimination of many foods along with close contact and interaction with a like-minded physician.

I am only giving this a 4 because it's above my head. My brain cells are not as young as they used to be and I have to reread and reread to try to understand this. I am trying and that is all I can say...

About the Author
Chris McIntyre went to Africa in 1987, after reading physics at Queen's College, Oxford. He taught with VSO in Zimbabwe for almost three years and travelled extensively, before co-authoring the UK's first guide to Namibia and Botswana for Bradt Travel Guides. He is now managing director of the specialist tour operator Expert Africa, and travels regularly to Africa, researching and updating his Bradt guides to Botswana, Zambia and Zanzibar, as well as Namibia. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Kindle version is fine...

Given all the reviews that said the Kindle edition had bugs/problems, I was a bit worried about my decision to purchase on Kindle. But I didn't want the paperback version.

I am happy to report that:
All the maps are easy to expand and view in as much detail as you like (at least 5 out of the 5 maps I have tested so far..)
The indexes appear to be accurate & fully functioning.
I tested a "bookmark" and it worked just fine & dandy.
I tested this on an iPad mini, a fairly "old" version, and also on a fairly new iPhone. Bookmarks were "shared" quite well between the iPad and the iPhone. Both of these use the Kindle app.

My conclusion is that the Kindle complaints were probably not the book itself, but something wrong with the Kindle platform and its compatibility with the device being used. If other books work well on Kindle for you, this one will probably also work just fine.

My five star rating is based on the technology, I have not yet really dug into the book; but my opinion so far on the actual content lines up with the opinions of all the other reviewers here.

The Guide For Namibia

I wrote an earlier review complaining about missing information in this book. While traveling, I discovered that the information was there but the formatting on Kindle is very awkward to use. I couldn't, for example, flip back and forth between open pages. The TOC would be far more helpful if it were more detailed. The alternatives is paging through a section from the beginning. Other than such issues, the book was genuinely helpful with very detailed information about where to go/how to get there. Definitely the go-to book for traveling in wonderful Namibia.

Pretty good guide, too bad Kindle version maps are worthless

seems pretty good, my interest is wildlife and I would have liked more detailed content on that.
HUGE mistake in one area - I bought the kindle version which should have been smart...guess what, you can't enlarge the included maps! At least, not any larger than the 5 or 6 font size choices you are given. So, if you are wanting to drill down into some detail, forget it!

About the Author
My first experience with test indicators was in the form of a family project. The Swiss manufacturer of the popular Alina 88 test indicator delivered parts to us on a weekly basis. It was our task to assemble them and this we did around the kitchen table on weekends during the sultry Long Island summers of the early 1960s. It was my task to install and adjust the hair springs. My mother assembled the bezels and crystals. My brothers had levers and reversing clips to mount. My father carefully finished the indicators and calibrated them. Ironically, the Alina 88 was quite similar to the Starrett Last Word indicator, an indicator which has not changed in any substantial way over the ensuing decades. The Alina 88 is now long gone but the Last Word remains a favorite among hobbyists and pros alike. I cannot begin to count the number of these gages which I have repaired in the past 35 years but I certainly feel justified in claiming to know more than a few tricks of the trade. With this volume I am pleased to offer my experiences to anyone wishing to tackle a repair of this American classic.

Surely the definitive work

Contains 4 to 10 large pages on every iron-clad battleship ever built for the British Navy. Each chapter contains a discussion of the design drivers, a series of line drawings showing armor disposition and internal layout, a photo, and class and ship summary. For important ships like the Dreadnought, there is additional written coverage actually superior to John Roberts masterpiece Anatomy Of The Ship (although of course with nothing like the quality of drawings and photos).

Interspersed are chapters describing political circumstances that drove naval decision-making, some AARs, contemporary foreign designs, and important non-battleships that influenced battleship evolution.

It is lovingly written, with a great flair for prose. On the debit side, he did not benefit from such recent work as John Campbell's Jutland analysis, and so Parkes' judgement of this battle somewhat inflates the British achievement.

Tragically out of print, I found mine for $100 used, and believe I have a terrific bargain. I might not have ventured, say, $150 prospectively, but now would not trade my volume for twice that.

About the Author

S. Rajasekar received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in physics both from the St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli. In 1987, he received his M.Phil. in physics from Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli. He was awarded a Ph.D. in physics (nonlinear dynamics) from Bharathidasan University in 1992. In 2005, he became a professor at the School of Physics, Bharathidasan University. His recent research focuses on nonlinear dynamics with a special emphasis on nonlinear resonances. He has coauthored a book, and authored or coauthored more than 80 research papers in nonlinear dynamics.

R. Velusamy received his B.Sc. in physics from the Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi in 1972 and M.Sc. in physics from the P.S.G. Arts and Science College, Coimbatore in 1974. He received an M.S. in electrical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai in the year 1981. In the same year, he joined in the Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College as an assistant professor in physics. He was awarded an M.Phil. in physics in 1988. He retired in 2010. His research topics are quantum confined systems and wave packet dynamics.

About the Author
Richard Fleming has degrees from Northwest Missouri State and Florida State University, including a doctorate in mathematics. After forty-two years as a professor of mathematics at the University of Missouri, the University of Memphis, and Central Michigan University, he retired and began to indulge a lifelong love of history. He lives in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, with his wife Diane.

This is a delightfully told story of the life of an influential American frontiersman. The author has made the story so fascinating, you'll not want the book to end.

Good use of understatements

Thoroughly researched. Conversationally written. Good use of understatements. Underbook was a valuable edition to assist the reader in what was fact and what was fiction. I had not expected the book to be about 900 pages, The book is really a series of short stories and can be read in short segments without breaking the main story line. I think it will well received by those that are fascinated by and familiar with the Lew Wetzel saga. Sexual content is cleverly left to the readers imagination. The author's lifelong fascination with Lew Wetzel is obvious in how thoroughly the topic was researched. A good check off on his bucket list.

An Eye Opening Novel into an Era Often Overlooked

What a treat. I started reading and couldn't put it down. Richard Fleming has done an excellent job of researching the facts and blending them with just the right amount of fiction and conjecture. Even without the "Underbook," I was able to recognize the history in e story. Wetzel was able to allow me the privilege of stepping back to an era that is really hard to understand. I was able to live the frustration of Native attacks with the knowledge that retribution would only escalate the problem. I appreciate the dilemma as a result of reading this well written work. Congratulations to Dr. Fleming on creating a book that is educational, enlightening, and exciting to read. I will read it again in a while in order to catch the things I missed as a result of reading it too fast the first time. The price may keep some from purchasing the book but with over 900 pages, it is worth the investment.

Lots of knowledge is contained in tis book. You should have a little experience with basic physics, especially waves and electricity. This is not a book for dummies. The author keeps the information flowing and keeps explanation as brief as possible. This is a good thing due to the sheer scope of the knowledge presented.
