This textbook develops Special Relativity in a systematic way assuming no prior knowledge of Relativity; however the student is assumed to be familiar with the basics of the standard vector calculus.

The approach is structural in the sense that it develops Special Relativity in Minkowski space following the same steps with the development of Newtonian Physics in Euclidian space. A second characteristic of the book is that it discusses the mathematics of the theory independently of the physical principles, so that the reader will appreciate its role in the development of the physical theory.

The book is intended to be used both as a text-book for a teaching course in Special Relativity but also as a reference book for the future. Comphrehensive, and deep, and excellent learning resourse

This book is by far the most comprehensive book on special relativity. Actually mathematical framework and notations is treated with such style that transition to general relativity is straight forward.

Mathematics is explained really well and there are whole chapters explaining physical aspects of the theory. This books covers all the topics that a particle physicists or frankly every physicist must be at home with. Most books on special relativity do not cover important aspects of special relativity in enough depth as to make a student at home with special relativity. This is sad as without internalizing the physics of special/general relativity and quantum mechanics, NO one can think as "real physicist" can.

This book is remarkable in that it covers so many aspects of special relativity with sound mathematical treatment that is understandable and most importantly makes one at home with special relativity. It goes beyond what others book covered.

Even more profoundly the solved problems and solutions are excellent and make a book an ideal tool for self learning.

Photos missing from the Kindle Edition

I purchased the Kindle Edition, and was disappointed to find nearly all the photos missing. Instead there was only the text [To view this image, refer to the print version of this title.] Under this text was the caption for the original image. This is not an acceptable ebook experience. How can a book about photojournalism be missing all the photos?

I can't comment on the quality of the book itself, because I immediately returned the Kindle Edition for a refund.

Daring to look

Linfield's book is well done account of photographs which represent things that, usually, we don't want to look at. The author brings into discussion the very ethics of looking, gazing and staring, criticizing opinions that affirm that to look at the pain of others is participate in the intentions of perpetrators of politic crimes, specially against human rights. The principal targets of her critics are Susan Sontag, Roland Barthes, Alan Sekula and John Berger, as well as Benjamin and Krakauer. For Linfield, this authors are not essentially wrong, but we should place their writings in perspective and not make gospels of them. In reading this interesting book, we come to know that "to look or not to look" is not merely a question of transcendental ethics, but a political act regarding the suffering of human people. Linfield not only invites us to be daring to look at the pain of others, but also to look into it, its testimonies, its visual existence, and try to make of the gaze a means of amelioration of our chaotic world.

the evil "postmoderns"

Frances Richard's review of The Cruel Radiance in The Nation is very good, but is more generous than I am able to muster after having read the book, especially "A Little History of Photography Criticism" and related areas throughout the book where Linfield attempts to write on historical and critical topics. She is simply not up to the task. She tries to critique Susan Sontag but effectively ignores her main book on the topic, Regarding the Pain of Others, and critiques Bertolt Brecht but effectively ignores his photographic book, Kriegsfibel (translated as War Primer). She rails on these and other "haters of photography" by cherry picking quotes, ignoring wildly different historical and discursive contexts, and trying to mask the fact that she has not done her homework with "passionate argument". For a book on representation, her representations of other writers are cartoonish; if the same standard were held for photographs she would be talking about the suffering of stick figures. Her varied oppositions between thinking and feeling begs the age old question of whether people can walk and chew gum at the same time. It will probably surprise many people that John Berger is counted among the photography haters and is, moreover, "postmodern" and that clashing art world denizens like Richard Prince against atrocity photos is supposed to produce valuable insight. I find it disheartening that a reputable enterprise like University of Chicago Press would let such sloppy work through.

Engrossing Insider's Look at Air Power during the Gulf War

I just finished this book, and, quite frankly, I feel like I have just been through a war. As a US Air Force officer who was just starting out during the time of the Gulf War, I had been looking forward to reading this book for a long time. I had already learned quite a bit about the Gulf War through other sources, but I was looking for a legitimate source of what was actually happening, on the ground and in the air, from a day-to-day perspective, and from somebody who had lived the experience.

This was the right book! The opening chapters introduce us to Gen Chuck Horner in an autobiographical approach. We learn what motivates him as a pilot, as an officer, and as a human being. We gain some insights from his experiences during Vietnam, and ultimately learn how that affected his approach to the Gulf War.

But the bulk of the book is about the Gulf War, and how the coalition forces made their decisions on the best way to approach the battle situation. My favorite partsin this book, were the "day-in-the-life" segments. We get to follow Gen Horner from the moment he wakes up, through briefings, visits to units, phone calls, problem solving, meetings with coalition partners, etc. to the minute he finally, gets to go to bed. We see and appreciate the job he does at the most mundane level, and yet understand how those small things lead to the big picture of war fighting. Gen Horner is generous in spreading the credit for successes and does not hold back in accepting blame when that is appropriate.

The only reason I didn't rate this book 5 stars is the lengthy explanations of air power and strategy. For those who are not familiar with such concepts, this information is vital, and so you should consider my rating to be 5 stars.

Finally, I appreciated Gen Horner's essay's on coalition building and the future of air and space power. I was fortunate enough to be assigned to Space Command for a short time before Gen Horner retired as CINCSPACE and from the US Air Force. And even though I was but a lowly Lieutenant, and never spoke directly with Gen Horner, I can tell you his impact on all of us was profound. As Tom Clancy states at the end of the book, "Gen Chuck Horner was the right man at the right time."

Truly ZAYN by ZAYN, a raw and unfiltered look at the person - not the popstar

Self-titled and self-produced, Zayn awards us with a view of his life pre, during, and post 1D. But the book isn’t really about 1D at all. It’s a sprawling and eclectic work of song notes, photographs of Malik, and a few pieces of his own personal art. It provides us, through the sentimental stories and heartwarming positivity that Malik weaves in every page, with a rare inside look at the person - not the popstar.

It’s romantic at times, simply in the personal and casual nature with which the book presents itself. You can imagine Malik spilling his life’s story to you at a barbecue, and the words seem pulling directly from his own thoughts. There's no ghostwriting here, and it's refreshing to see a celebrity's "personal account of their life" actually be their OWN personal account, and not an interviewer trying to hammer in the person's syntax in every sentence. These are Zayn's words, emphatic and innocent and so very relatable.

There’s not much sugar-coating, either. It’s honest and real, two things that Malik has professed to always striving for, and I must say he definitely succeeds. He details his struggles with an eating disorder, as well as crippling anxiety and self-doubt. It’s equal parts heart wrenching and hopeful. He vows to perform, vows to make his fans and his family proud, and you find yourself rooting for him to do just that. Though Malik pulls no punches, describing his feelings about lack of control in his life that led to his eating disorder, there’s a wistfulness to his words. Never cynical or even histrionic, but occasionally weathered after the vast amount of life he’s lived already, the book also serves as a true reminder that Malik is only twenty-two years old. He is just barely an adult in the eyes of the world, but has already experienced enough to fill a book. He’s charming in his photographs, and his talent shines through in song notes, bits of unused lyrics, and his own personal art creations he displays.

All-in-all, it was a great read. I finished in just about two and a half hours - and that was with stopping to appreciate Malik’s beauty in every photograph. It’s a quick read-through, meant to be browsed and perused and appreciated for years to come. If you want to know about the real Zayn Malik, there’s no better way than with his own words, and this is it.

Beautiful and Potent

I bought the book a few hours and finished it a few seconds before starting this review. As I went through each page, I was caught up into every word printed. Even as my Kindle Fire HD keeps messing up, I keep coming back to finish this review. Every penny spent was well worth it. I don't typically read non fiction or memoirs because I'm a suspense loving reader, but lately, nothing's kept my interest to get past a few chapters. I decided today that I would read something new and hopefully, be engaged.

Engaged, I was. Zayn puts his heart into every word. There are many subjects that the media said were in the book that isn't and for that, actually, I'm thankful. He never speaks badly about anyone in his book. He's positive and kind about life, music, and the people in his life. I found myself feeling for him, understanding the person and wanting to know more.

What I enjoyed most was probably him describing the music process with each producer and in turn, the producers thoughts on him.

Beautifully written and powerfully told, I recommend this book to even a person who knows nothing about him.

Good but isn't what I expected

From the bio and all the hype about the book, I expected this to be almost like an inside look into zayns journal through out the past few years, or him giving his 100% unfiltered thoughts on the situations he has faced, and that's not what this is at all. It's mostly pictures of zayn with little blurbs of "I'm finally in control" and a little background of a few select songs. It's a decent book for what it is but it's not at all what was expected.

A seminal book on the philosophy of man as taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Helps one to understand and cope with the struggles of life including illness, abuse, death. Although a very short book, Madsen is able to explain the eternal natuir of man in an understandable and uplifting way. A book that needs to be read more than once.

Great introduction to the Mormon concept of man as an eternal individual

I originally read this book about 30 years ago as the textbook in an LDS institute class. At the time I was very impressed by the content of this little book and decided to re-read it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it again.

The book is a collection of 7 essays by Truman Madsen, about the LDS concept of man as an eternal being, which were originally published in the Instructor, the LDS church's magazine geared toward youth and young adults, starting in 1963. They were collected in book form and published in 1966. The book is only 80 pages long, but the concepts contained herein are profound and powerful. The book is geared toward LDS college students, who were asking "How do the arguments and positions of the various `schools' of thought compare with the teachings of Joseph Smith and of the Restored Gospel?"

The first essay is titled "Whence Cometh Man???" and is a summary of the next 6 chapters and discusses the foundational LDS doctrine of the pre-existence and highlights that men and women have always existed as uncreated and indestructible intelligences and are co-eternal with God. The doctrine states that we are spiritually begotten of God, and that physical life is to obtain a physical body and prove ourselves worthy to return to God's presence.

The remaining chapters cover the following issues: 1. The Problem of Identity, which reviews the LDS position on self compared with orthodox Christianity, Existentialism, and Humanism. 2. The Paradoxes of Creation, which discusses the LDS rejection of creation "ex nihilo" and its profound impact on many philosophies. 3. The Mind-body Problem, which talks about the Mormon view that the body and spirit combined form the soul of man and how the physical resurrection and permanent union of these is one of the objects of our creation. 4. The Problem of Human Freedom, which shows how humans truly are free agents and are not simply creatures and the impact of this thought. 5. The Problem of Evil, of Suffering, which can be explained much more easily given that fact that we are eternal beings here to learn to love and be tried and strengthened, which can only happen with true free will and its consequences. 6. The Problem of Self-awareness, which reflects on those flashes of remembrance some of us have related to the divine that many poets have discussed and how this relates to our spiritual pre-existence.

I highly recommend this book to anyone desiring to understand the most fundamental philosophical differences between LDS and others. It would be great to see this book reprinted once again.

The Shattering of the Self

One can approach this book hoping for a part of the answer to "understanding terrorism" and "why do they hate us?" Using a post-Freudian toolkit of literary, gender and film theory on Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, a play of torture, rape and dismemberment popular in his day and revived in our own, as well as on other popular and ghastly works of that time, the author explains them, to greatly simplify, as a reaction to the emerging individuality in the Renaissance. This new sense of "self" could not satisfy all the passion and depth of the total personality, and so was a hindrance to the expression of more complete and natural human feelings--which are much more than our con-scious understanding, ethics, mores or religion.

In the audience's pleasurable participation in the "shattering" of all that someone called "the seven deadly virtues" there was joy and release for the moment--all within the irresponsible safety of the collective group. This shattering allowed the eventually reassembled "self" ("ego" in Jungian terms) to take into account, become conscious of, some of the previously missing or supplanted complexity.

Today, with our "only superpower" ego-formation, we are missing a lot of realities, not only in our individual and national unconscious, but also in the greater world beyond our borders. We don't have to depend on Shakespeare revivals to supply us with corrective violence--we have our own movie/TV monstrosities: Swarznegger/Stallone/StevenKings, etc.. We also have the terrorists on the world stage eager to shatter our self-image, because it's an image that has been supplanting or impinging on the once relatively stable collective selves of the resentful citizens of other places. Think of the defeated South's actor/assassin Booth, drawn to the stage at Ford's Theater; of the stage-struck terrorists from suppressed Chechnya that made their entrance at a Moscow theater.

Terrible things happen when man's supposed goodness is overplayed and his dark side denied. We think we're good, the terrorists think they're good. Where does the evil go? It's sometimes played out in local crime, national theaters, on the world stage. We are shattered.

Professor Marshall's book is a scholarly, wonderfully wise, detailed and painful examination of how it worked in various media in Shakespeare's time, and more than a hint of what we face today. We were the audience/participants watching re-runs of 9/11 as our sense of invulnerability, our egos, temporarily crumbled. Those we bomb get the same "audience participation." Our reforming sense of self, hopefully, will minimize the future "need" for shattering. It doesn't seem to be going that way, yet.
