My Favorite Galatians Commentary so far

I have about 30 to 35 commentaries on Galatians in my office this year as I am working through the book for a sermon series (I'm a pastor). I was pleasantly surprised at the basic verse by verse exegesis of this commentary and find myself looking at it more closely than the other commentaries I have. I find a lot of scholarship has been clearly packed into each sentence he writes with clear statements he communicates crucial concepts line after line. I found some of his observations help a preaching pastor to develop better sermons. For example, an easy one is the point that when Paul says 'Grace and Peace' he is using an impartation style. The implications of that are overlooked in other commentaries I examined. Almost every nuance is helpful...as he explores the order of the Pauline verse descriptions it helped me to identify mirror like patterns in Galatians 1.

I also like the way he describes things better than most commentaries. Even in the NICNT series sometimes one has too look elsewhere for preachable phraseology. But I've found that a lot of Fung's stuff will preach almost as it is.

He's very good. I think that he has earned a place among the top few commentaries on Galatians written in English. I heartily recommend you get this-even over his mentor (FF Bruce) on Galatians NIGTC...which is pretty good as well. I usually go to Stott for preaching phrases, but not in Galatians. I'm sticking with Fung for now.

So whether you agree with the other reviewer or not about the South Galatians theory and it's implications, the basic verse by verse exegesis is exceptionally helpful and I'm very excited to have this commentary in my library.

A creditable commentary

Fung's commentary on Galatians replaces one of the older volumes in the NICNT series. The updating has allowed a full consideration of the more recent developments in Galatians scholarship, particularly the immense influence of the work of Hans Dieter Betz. This series of commentaries is committed to an evangelical perspective, a commitment which has a positive and negative impact on this particular volume. On the negative side, Fung accepts the "South Galatia" theory of provenance with very little critical examination, seemingly motivated by the desire to connect the letter with the account in Acts 16. Fung spends a large portion of the introduction attempting to reconcile the chronology of Galatians 2 with that of Acts. His theological assumptions require him to conclude that the Jersalem meeting described in Galatians is not the same one reported in Acts 15 in order to keep Paul's report in Galatians honest and make it match the chronology of Acts. The argument here is laborious and confusing. Readers not familiar with the issue will have a hard time following. On the positive side, in the main part of the commentary the text receives primary attention. Fung gives ample attention to issues of textual-criticism and Greek grammar. Every verse receives significant attention, and the observations about the text should be useful to pastor, student, or scholar. Fung is largely persuaded by Betz, but rhetorical method and jargon do not dominate the commentary. This commentary certainly ranks behind those of Martyn and Longenecker, but a wide range of readers, especially those with evangelical commitments, should find it quite useful.

A must have reference

As a lay Elder, I have found this volume to be indispensable in my studies while leading our body through a study of the book of Galatians. While it is a very scholarly work, at the same time it is not out of the reach of the non-seminary trained individual. This is a very dificult ballance to achieve, but Dr. Fung has succeeded in doing just that. This is a must have reference for all students of this book!

About the Author
Patricia Libby is Chair of the Department of Accounting and Associate Professor of Accounting at Ithaca College, where she teaches the undergraduate financial accounting course. She previously taught graduate and undergraduate financial accounting at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Texas. Before entering academe, she was an auditor with Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) and a financial administrator at the University of Chicago. She received her B.S. from Pennsylvania State University, her M.B.A. from DePaul University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan; she is also a CPA.
Pat conducts research on using cases in the introductory course and other parts of the accounting curriculum. She has published articles in The Accounting Review, Issues in Accounting Education, and The Michigan CPA. She has also conducted seminars nation-wide on active learning strategies, including cooperative learning methods.

Dan Short is the Dean of the M.J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX. �Prior to that he was Dean at Richard T. Farmer School of Business at Miami University and Dean of the Business School at Kansas State University. �Before entering adminstration, Dan taught at the University of Texas-Austin and the University of Chicago. �He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. �He has won numerous teaching awards during his career teaching both undergraduate and MBA financial accounting courses.

Robert Libby is the David A. Thomas Professor of Management at the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, where he teaches the introductory financial accounting course. He previously taught at the University of Illinois, Pennsylvania State University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Chicago, and University of Michigan. He received his B.S. from Pennsylvania State University and his M.A.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois; he is also a CPA.
Bob is a widely published author specializing in behavioral accounting. He was selected as the AAA Outstanding Educator in 2000. His prior text, Accounting and Human Information Processing (Prentice Hall, 1981), was awarded the AICPA/AAA Notable Contributions to the Accounting Literature Award. He received this award again in 1996 for a paper. He has published numerous articles in the Journal of Accounting Research; Accounting, Organizations, and Society; and other accounting journals. He is past Vice President-Publications of the American Accounting Association and is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the editorial boards of The Accounting Review; Accounting, Organizations, and Society; Journal of Accounting Literature; and Journal of Behavioral Decision Making.

As good as "financial accounting" is ever gonna get.

This good is very helpful, both graphically and technically. I does a great job of explaining everything in plain english and reenforcing those lesson with real world experience. The one complain i have is that there is no answer key so that I can verify my answer (after all, one slip up can effect every following financial document).

HEY LIBBY, LIBBY, AND SHORT! If you can hear me, quit trying to "force the readers to learn." If they want to cheat and not understand the material, then let them get fired from their jobs in five years for not knowing how to do their jobs. The rest of us hard working students are left scratching our heads, wondering if the work we did was correct. INCLUDE AN ANSWER KEY.

Lucid, intersting and easy to follow

I am an engineer running a small company. Last year I bought an accounting package to keep better track of my business. Though the software is great the accompaning manuals are of no use and their concise introduction to accounting did make matters worse.
I have been looking at several accounting manuals but could not find one I could just sit down with and read on my own.
Well now I have found it. This manual is easy to read, clear and to the point and the real company examples make it interesting. After reading only two chapter I realized that the information that came with the accounting software put me totally on the wrong track.
I can recommend this book, manual very highly.

Black Feathers

This is a very careful and intelligent approach to a particular method of ocean racing. I feel qualified to share my opinion of this book by Robert and Jeanne Crawford because I have sailed and raced 100,000 miles in the Pacific, Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and the South China Sea. Four Pacific crossings including the Pacific Cup Doublehanded Race in 1988. I cast an Ocean Racer's eye on this account and it comes up right. I especially like the description of the events and ambition that led up to the decision to sail in the 2008 Singlehanded Trans Pac. The personal interaction between Robert, his family and the other competitors is insightful and sensitive. Never boastful or sensational , a delightful account with the right mix of detail and personal recall of events make this book a joy to read. Included are nuts and bolts appendices applicable to any such voyage. Any who has ever sailed will enjoy this book and everyone else will find it a superb adventure story. It's required reading for any novice or experienced sailor who contemplates a voyage, singlehanded or crewed on a big ocean.

Black Feathers is a Great Read

After sailing this weekend in the IYC DH Lightship, the skipper I was sailing with mentioned that there was a book about Black Feathers, I immediately went on Amazon and ordered a copy. I've seen this Cal 20 in the S.F. South Beach Marina and taken a close look at all the equipment setup for ocean racing.

Black Feathers, A Pocket Racer Sails the Singlehanded Transpac is a great read. The detailed accounts of high emotions and reasoning behind what is needed to achieve the accomplishment of completing the SSS Transpac were especially interesting to me. The specific details about what is needed for a small boat to be equipped properly for this type of voyage will be of use to me now and in the future.

My compliments to Robert and Jeanne Crawford for compiling this book. The people in Oregon with the large Cal 20 fleet weren't the only people interested in your story. I'm glad that there was a list of small boats that have competed in the SSS Transpac over the years that included my Wilderness 21. The reading of this book has give me new inspiration to consider what would be needed for my boat Tinker to compete in this event.

Thanks again to Robert for this great book. I recommend anyone seriously interested in the Singlehanded Sailing Society or Transpac should pick up a copy.

Black Feathers' trip to Hawaii

Even though I'm not a sailor, this book is fascinating. I really felt like I was on the boat during the first part of the book, which tells about the trip. I doubt the part about how to rig your boat for sea travel will make much sense to me, but I bought a copy for my neighbor who is interested in fixing up his boat for sea travel. He can't wait to get started on it. Kay

Profundity in the Sahara

I have no difficulty declaring that I sometimes think The Sheltering Sky is the best book I've ever read, and it was one I didn't see coming. I don't even remember why I bought it, or why I started reading it, and in truth, I read it (the first time) very slowly for the first 100 pages or so before I caught on to what it was saying. You can read other reviews on here that focus more on the plot, and they're true enough - this does tell the story of three Americans, who may be sort of "shallow" (as many reviews describe them, although perhaps a better word is "naive"... although "shallow" isn't wrong) wandering through the edges of the horn of Africa after the end of WWII. There is too much emphasis on sorting out the "what," however - the plot details are important but they're just the beginning. What are Port and Kat, the central characters, looking for? Why are they traveling? The characters themselves might not be able to really tell you, except that when they more or less wish to shed their bourgeois American values, the Sheltering Sky becomes the greatest story ever written about being careful what you wish for. Some reviewers on here have also focused on the similarity of the book to many of Bowles' short stories, and thematically it's true - his short stories condense the book's theme neatly (one story, "Tampiana," probably described it best: "What is freedom in the last analysis, other than the state of being totally, instead of partially, subject to the tyranny of chance?"). But The Sheltering Sky's dark, wounding secret is that the events themselves are just the pretext for a journey into the depth of self and the darkness of the human condition, even from two characters accurately described as "shallow." It's written with the simplicity of of a Hemingway novel merged with the dark poetry of William S. Burroughs (who himself became an acolyte of the novel), and manages to become a kind of exorcism of the madness within. I hesitate to go more into depth about that idea, as discovering and ruminating over the power of the novel was the best part of my experience in reading it - like the greatest novels, it altered my consciousness, and I've spent the years since reading it the first time dying to have others to talk to about it. Rereading the novel has never dulled its power, and if anything it reveals the simple poetry of the prose itself. But the power of, I think, Bowles' ideas as a writer and thinker are never better expressed than The Sheltering Sky, a book that once you've given yourself over to it manages to sear in your consciousness and change how you think.

A Challenging and Disturbing Novel

I hesitate to review a book that I didn't enjoy in the conventional sense and probably still don't fully understand. Some reviewers have called The Sheltering Sky "a masterpiece." Others have gushed that they "love" the novel, which seems to me an inappropriate response to an unsparingly bleak view of the human condition. I admire Paul Bowles' writing, even when it is infuriatingly enigmatic, and I respect his stature as an icon of what we today call the Beat Generation. But the story? Well.... The story, such as it is, centers on a young American married couple, Port and Kit Moresby. The fact that the husband's name is the same as the capital of Papua, New Guinea, is never commented upon and remains a minor irritant throughout the novel. It is 1949, the aftermath of World War II, and the Moresbys, rich and seemingly carefree but decidedly unconventional, have come to North Africa to experience what they hopefully think of as one of the last "unspoiled" places on Earth. They are soon joined, more or less accidentally, by another American, the doltish Tunner, and a revoltingly crass couple, the Lyles, who may be (or may not be) mother and son. The Moresbys escape these parasites by fleeing deep into the interior of the vast Sahara Desert without plan or direction. The result, predictably enough, is disaster and a deeply troubling d�nouement. The point here may be that one can find reality only by tearing away the false curtain of civilization (the "sheltering sky") and confronting nature, human and otherwise, in its most primitive and frightening state. But the question of what to do with that dreadful knowledge goes unanswered. Bowles' novel remains as mysterious as the Sahara itself. Those who read The Sheltering Sky are in for a thoughtful, disturbing, and challenging journey in the company of one of the Twentieth Century's greatest writers.

Complex Book

This book reminded me of something Hemingway would write. Parts were slow and I wanted more to happen. The characters were so foreign to my way of life, it was hard for me to fathom why they would spend so much money and get so little pleasure out of their travels. I kept thinking, "Don't they have anything better to do with their lives?"
