His four daughters, Anna, Louisa, Elizabeth and May, were his pride and joy. Louisa was the most daring of all of them. From an early life, Louisa was always getting into trouble and loved the outdoors.

This fierce determination of Louisa’s — to embark upon the unknown — was a trait she carried through to adulthood. Growing up in a household full of love and joy helped bridge the upheaval everytime they moved. They were poor, but happy.

As Louisa grew, she started to understand the difficulties her parents had faced, and continued to face. Determined to help her parents, Louisa set out on a number of employment opportunities — teaching, sewing, nursing, writing — bringing in meagre wages, however hard she tried.

Through a turn of fate, her short stories and letters brought her to the attention of publishers. A particularly cunning publisher, Mr Thomas Niles, urged Louisa to write a book for girls. Louisa wrote about her own mother and sisters. Little Women became a sensational hit around the world.

From the proceeds, Louisa was able to provide her family with the desperately needed stable income — her one aim in life. She gave her family everything they ever wanted or needed.

She finally had fame and affection — something that was seldom earned.

In this book, Cornelia Meigs tells us the full story of the Alcott (March) family. An unbelievable story of a brave, loving family, even more wonderful than Little Women.

Cornelia Meigs (1844 – 1973) was an American writer. She wrote both fiction and biographies for children. She was also a teacher of English and writing. Meigs began writing children’s books while she was a teacher. During World War II, she spent a year in the War Department. Meigs won the Newbery Medal for the biography of Louisa May Alcott, Invincible Louisa.

A Classic

I think that Invincible Louisa is a wonderful, well written book. No offence meant to the other reviewers of this book, but I think that Invincible Louisa did not drag along slowly at all. It is a wonderful book for 11, 12, and 13 year olds, or 10 year olds who are advanced in reading. However, to like this book, you have to like Little Women, or any other of Louisa's books. If you like books about American History, around the time of the Civil War, you will also probably like this book. It is a vivid account of Louisa May Alcott and her faimly's life. It tells how they struggled through poverty and other hardships that would have destroyed any other faimly's life.

Still a Classic 33 Years Later!

The mark of a superb biography, as is this 1934 Newbery Awardwinner, is that it details the momentous events of the times, along with the tale of the heroine, Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888). The author immerses us in gorgeous poetic language, and plenty of important vocabulary words for the young adult reader. Within these 246 pages we find the origins of the famous characters of Alcott's "Little Women" and "Little Men," a necessity in a biography, and retrace Alcott's steps through her birth in the Germantown area of Philadelphia, through her family's poverty-stricken years in Boston. Alcott realizes her ne'er do-well brilliant father, Bronson, is a dreamer and not a realist; yet his prophetic ideas on education later took hold.

The mid-1800s were a pivotal time in American history, the era of the Abolitionists, the Underground Railway, The Civil War and of Idealist Philosophies such as the Shaker religion and the Transcendental Movement with contemporaries such as Emily Dickinson, Thoreau and Emerson. The Alcott Family breaks bread with the latter great men, and indeed, her early mentor Emerson tells Louisa, "Your father might have talked with Plato."

She is much like her father. Impulsively, she travels at age 30 to Washington, DC, to become a nurse to the wounded Northerners in the Civil War. Hopelessness & disorganization is rife in the make-shift hospital, reminiscent of today's stalled attempts to rebuild New Orleans: "One soldier, with such a bad heart that he should never have been taken into the army... was given heavy trays to carry... When [such injustices] were practiced in her ward, Louisa had a simple remedy. She herself lifted and carried and got down on her knees to scrub the floor."

Alcott's tenacity, devotion to family, love of learning and of writing, make her an ideal heroine for today's Little Women. Recommended for curious readers from age 10 to 100.

What a great book!

This book brings to life the incredible story of Louisa May Alcott the author of many books the one best known was Little Women, which launched her career as an author. It is beautifully written and gives great insight as to how difficult life was in that era. Well worth your time.

dope and deep

This book is deep on so many levels.At first I thought pimp was icebergs best book.Upon rereading this recently after study of early african american culture I love this book so much more.Even though the characters are not real the sense of pain,dispair,and oppresion are very vivid and detailed in this book.From the mental slavery of sharecropping to false freedoms of the north this book will take you back to a timeperiod of unimaginable struggle.A must have for any iceberg or donald goines fan.

Wishbone Textbook!

This is a must-read for people who "wish" to "bone" up on how to install
and run the most productive offensive weapon ever devised in College Football
history. Many diagrams of all of the major optioning plays are included,
plus, it has coaching tips with diagrams for all offensive team players
involved.

Credit for origination of the Wishbone was covered in Acknowledgements
Page iv, this book. The Wishbone was born in the mind of Emory Ballard
and utilized initially by Darryl Royal of Texas. These men also shared
their knowledge of the Wishbone to other college programs such as Alabama,
Oklahoma, UCLA, and Air Force, the last team to utilize this system.

For some reason, the formation was discontinued by Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama,
and UCLA after a defensive genius devised a "solution" defense to the Wishbone;
(leaving the Air Force program to retain the triple-option Wishbone T attack).

For those who have not studied the "BackBone" defense, there is a book authored
by its inventor Phil Jack Dawson: "Defeating Triple-Option Offenses With The
Backbone Defense". All details needed for defending the Wishbone are included.
(Too bad, I enjoyed watching this powerhouse offense in operation gobble yardage
in the 70's and early eighties, and hoped it would never end!!).

Other books discussing the Wishbone offense include "Blood Sweat and Chalk"
by Tim Layden, of Sports Illustrated, in chapter 4; and "Wishbone-Oklahoma
Football 1959-1984 (Not all of that time included playing the "Wishbone",
this formation begins discussion in Chapter 9 "The Magificent 'Bone
October 1970".

In sum, this book tells exactly how to install and run the Wishbone T offense.
An excellent resource, to use in case renewed interest in the use of the system
is generated. I highly recommend this book.

I purchased the Adult CCRN exam secrets study guide. It would be unfair for me to give a rating at this time as I just received the book. I was disappointed because I thought that this book came with flash cards and that is why I made the purchase. At first glance the book seems to include all the topics needed for the exam and I look forward to using this book for studying. I would recommend an online version with the purchase in the future.
