Great information, took *tons* of notes

Let me say first that I have been running a website with 300 editors for almost ten years now. I came into this course - and bought this book - having already experienced a variety of issues with communication. I knew just how critical communication could be to an organization. I had seen good quality communication that made work a joy, and I had seen troubled communication which caused disasters. I found this book *incredibly* helpful.

Our course was 12 weeks and every week we dedicated ourselves to one of the chapters. Every week I took a ton of notes from the chapter we worked on - not just to pass the class, but because the information was fascinating and directly useful for my daily tasks. The examples were ones I could relate to and demonstrated the issues clearly. There were many times that I'd read a chapter and then enthusiastically go talk to my editors about the ideas, finding ways we could incorporate them in our process.

There are discussions on handling a crisis. On ways to manage a group activity or meeting that keeps things flowing smoothly. The differences between writing policies and handling task specific communication. Dealing with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Ensuring that the messages you give out are listened to and respected.

I could imagine, for example, that a young student with no experience in running meetings or dealing with group dynamics might not understand why there's time dedicated to this topic or how important it could be. For people who have gone through those issues and seen how they can bog down a project, the information is invaluable.

Very well recommended. As the book mentions, communication is NOT just for "communications professionals" (HR, newsletter writers, etc.) This information is incredibly valuable for anyone who wants to become better respected and heard in their career.

If I'm going to look for flaws, perhaps it's that Chapter 12 is all about "ways to find jobs that involve your communication skills". I don't need that kind of information in this book. I'd get a book on finding jobs if that's what I needed.

About the Author
Stuart Greenbaum is a leading authority on banks. Formerly dean of the John M. Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis, he spent twenty years at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, where he was the Director of the Banking Research Center and the Norman Strunk Distinguished Professor of Financial Institutions. Three times he was appointed to the Federal Savings and Loan Advisory Council and was twice officially commended for extraordinary public service. He is founding editor of the Journal of Financial Intermediation.

As the John E. Simon Professor of Finance and Senior Associate Dean of Programs at the Olin School of Business, Washington University, St. Louis, Anjan Thakor works in both academia and the business world. Prior to joining the Olin School, he was Edward J. Frey Professor of Banking and Finance at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, where he also served as chairman of the Finance area. He has worked with many companies, including Whirlpool Corporation, Allision Engine Co., Citigroup, RR Donnelley, Dana Corporation, Anheuser-Busch, Zenith Corporation, Lincoln National Corporation, and J.P. Morgan.

Arnoud Boot is Professor of Corporate Finance and Financial Markets at the University of Amsterdam and Director of the Amsterdam Center for Law and Economics. He is Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research and at the Davidson Insitute at the University of Michigan.

Its also a very helpful book for those who have struggled to receive the empowerment of the Spirit to be effective in ministry. This book is a great teaching book on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. There is a lot of confusion on this topic but this book does a great job of clearly explaining it. I also enjoyed the chapter on the Gifts of the Spirit. Buy this book if you want to grow in your Christian walk.

Grimberg, a psychiatrist and art historian, has authored and edited several books and exhibition catalogs on the poignant life and works of Frida Kahlo. In these two recent books, Grimberg focuses both on Kahlo's creative process and on how her works, self-portraits and still lifes, complement each other and serve as windows to consider the artist and her other paintings. Song of Herself centers on a series of interviews between Kahlo and Olga Campos, a psychologist and Kahlo's friend; Kahlo's words have been grouped together to present her revealing musings on a variety of subjects, such as children, sexuality, politics, and her own body. Following the interviews are two brief sections, one that details the artist's medical history and the other, an assessment of the artist by a modern-day psychologist. The core of the book is a series of interviews an Olga Campos had with Kahlo when Campos was a student. In the book, it is more like a monologue than a typical interview format. There's no question-and-response: Kahlo's words on a variety of subjects have been grouped together. Among the subjects are Children, Animals, Social Conscience, and My Body. As expected, the Mexican artist's words on each subject are vivid, direct, revealing, honest, and personal--like her paintings.

There's also considerable ancillary material, though it does not overshadow the interview. Sections by Grimberg named as the author, a psychoanalytic art historian, are the Introduction and following essay "With the Image in the Mirror" with material and commentary on Fahlo's life, personality, and art. Campos contributes the memoir "My Memory of Frida" preceding the rearrangement of the content of her interviews. After the lengthy part in Khalo's own words are sections on the artist's medical history and a psychological assessment of her. The variety of material--vintage and later, subjective and objective, medical and critical--presents a complex picture fitting for this most complex and fragile of artists.

This work is a companion to the recently-published Frida Khalo - The Still Lifes from the same publisher also authored by Grimberg. Together the two books offer a fresh look at Kahlo in light of material which is new or has been neglected.

The Mexican folk artist Frida Kahlo's life is well known yet she remains an enigma: here psychiatrist and Kahlo expert Salomon Grimberg introduces an interview she gave towards the end of her life to her psychologist friend Olga Campos - an interview which was never published, yet lends great insights into Kahlo's life. Campos's reflections on their relationship accompanies this unpublished survey and makes for an outstanding presentation essential for any folk art library or Kahlo collection.
